THE DIARY GAME: 06.08.2020: PRACTICAL ISSUES

Hello steemians…am here again today…hope you all are doing well and safe…
Today got me here once again…just thinking of how the day will be…you know why? I was feeling lazy…but I got to finish up with the practical works today.

Today, I left home as early as 8am in the morning trying to reach my colleague before travelling…so I can get the keys to the Laboratory.

On reaching him in his place, I got the keys to the Laboratory and went straight to the Laboratory to open it.
On reaching the Lab…I got the samples…ready for the following tests: particle size distribution by Hydrometer method and the california bearing ratio (CBR)

This test is very useful because it differentiate silt from clay fractions. The test was conducted by using hydrometer, measuring cylinder and sodium hexametaphosphate chemical which acts as a dispersant.

I added Distilled water to 100g of each of the samples and stirred to completely disintegrate the sample and kept for 24 hours after which it was sieve from 0.75um, this was done yesterday. I poured the samples into 1000ml cylinder and added water to it with the chemical.

A hydrometer was inserted to take readings at 0.5minutes ,1,2,4,8,15,30,60,120,240,1440 all in minutes. After which i computed the results using formulars and plotted a graph of particle size against percentage finer to determine silt fraction from clays

After the first test (that is Particle size distribution), I continued with the second test which was california bearing ratio (CBR).

This particular test is used to ascertain the suitability of the soil to be used as a filling material. The standard of the borrow pit to be used for the road construction was 15% CBR.

The CBR test measures the strength of the filling materials to be used, with the particle size that traverses from 0.2 mm- 0.4 mm. CBR test is a penetration test for evaluation of the mechanical strength of natural ground, subgrades and base courses beneath new carriageway construction.

In this test, I performed it by measuring the pressure required to penetrate soil or aggregate with a plunger of standard area. This measured pressure was then divided by the pressure required to achieve an equal penetration on a standard crushed rock material

So very tired...
Thanks ...

Hello @amplegeologist.
Considering your username in relation with the practical you did in the laboratory today, I infer that you are a geologist or a materials engineer. Good job. I love the way you explained the processes involved in your practical today. Well done.

It's so good to have you playing #thediarygame.
