San Sai Mun Temple at dusk (วัดสันทรายมูล)

in #th5 years ago

This temple complex is an unusual one since it also doubles as a public school during the day, which of course means it is absurdly loud until all the kids go home. Therefore, I have avoided this place until now because I just happened to be biking past it an noticed that it was dead quiet. There's nothing quite like a group of perpetually screaming kiddos that can completely ruin the tranquility of a temple.

San Sai Mun is nicely maintained and located right next to a busy road, I wouldn't really say this one is worth the trip for anyone visiting the area, but if if you live here, it is a winner.

There are two main buildings which house a shrine with an important Buddha relic of sorts inside. Both buildings were shut when I arrived so I will just have to assume it is really nice inside as well. I am normally apprehensive to approach anything at a religious site, so mostly i just kept my distance and took some photos.

these dragon guardian things always impress me

Around the back of one of the main halls was an area with some drums that I presume are ceremonial in nature and no, I did not touch them. They were an impressive size though.

Then there was this building which i am guessing houses something really important since you are not even allowed to get near it.

I have seen a hundred temples since I moved here and they always seem to impress me in a way even though for the most part they are all quite similar. They are always a nice respite from the noisy world outside and they are always super clean and have an aroma of burning incense around the clock.

Of course if you were going to visit this temple you need to go either on a weekend or past 4pm less the deafening sound of kids running and screaming every chance they get might spoil the ambiance. Personally I have flashbacks whenever I find myself in these situations because I was a school-teacher once and I absolutely hated that job.

None of the garden statues are made of any sort of precious stones or metal but I still admire the craftsmanship. Perhaps they are mass-produced in a factor - I have no idea. It doesn't change the fact that they are quite lovely and overall, especially since it is free, I can see no reason to not go here.

Thats kinda odd to use a temple as a school, so people can't go in and pray during daytime? Then at night I presume its closed and you wouldn't pray at night time anyway 🤔

By the way, if you're adding GPS coordinates , the SteemitWorldMap is the perfect place to do that. We curate every day and blocktrades support our curations as well!!! Though you do have a lot of support already, but there's no such thing as too much support right 😊?

You can access the map here

ah great! Thanks, i was totally unaware of the steemitworldmp. I will use that in the future for sure.

as for the temple, i would hope that they would make the kids be quiet at least at some point in the day haha. When i was teaching at the elementary school it didn't seem to matter what time of day it was, it was always pandemonium in the halls and common grounds.

If you post via travelfeed.io the location feature is super easy to use!

Nice shots of the temple and surrounding area. I think it is interesting that pretty much all of the temples seem to have buddha artifcats sitting around. With the number of temples that you keep talking about it is hard to believe that there are enough artifacts to go around for all of them. I get that some of the smaller places might not have them like the bigger ones. I guess I am just asking is it really possible that that many artifacts exist? I am guessing you would know better than I do!

I wouldn't have guessed that you were a school teacher once. I would not be able to handle that job. Screaming kids makes makes blood vessels burst in my brain.

Very beautiful places...

LOL

and to add on of what @livinguktaiwan mentioned, if you post through travelfeed, it will automatically add the post on steemitworldmap :)

gotcha, i should have done that. If i visit anywhere interesting in the near future (I don't get to travel as much as you do!) I will use their interface. In retrospect I should have done that anyway. Lesson learned !

Maybe they are trying to cleanse the temple of evil spirits so what better way than leaving kids in there all day. Had no idea you had the patience to be a school teacher and is not one profession I could see you doing. Diving instructor yes but not teaching kids.

i taught as a means to an end. i needed money. I quickly found other ways of making it and have determined there is no chance i would ever do that job again. I would run to back to the states and get a job in Taco Bell with the teenagers before i would teach TEFL again.

This is actually a very beautiful temple. When I was visiting the temple, it wasn't planned and even it was shut. But It was so beautiful and even the white temple is amazing.

When you say "white temple" do you mean the famous and relatively new one up in Chiang Rai?
