Experiment in Spain: for 24 days the island of Hierro was provided by RES only
The island of Hierro, part of the Canary archipelago, was fully supplied with electricity from renewable energy sources for 24 days.
From 13th of July to 7th of August this year a large part of “green” electricity, as reported by REE, the system operator in Spain, was generated by Gorona del Viento complex, which includes the wind farm, a hydroelectric pumped-storage plants and an industrial storage of energy, it is the water reservoir of the pumped storage power plant.
The capacity of Gorona del Viento is about 22.8 MW, of which 11.5 MW is the capacity of the wind farm.
The pilot project of the hybrid power plant was developed specifically for use in the power system of the island of Hierro. This power plant is able to accumulate excess electricity produced by the station during periods of significant wind activity, it covers the demand for electricity during insufficient wind activity.
By the way, Gorona del Viento was started in July 2015. And from August 9, 2015 to the present time, the energy supply of the island was fully provided by the energy complex during 5 171.6 hours.
