Dropping Facebook? Here’s what else.

So, you’re finally getting around to ditching your facebook account, eh? Congratulations! Frankly, it's about time. Many of us have been clear of that site for years now. We knew they were founded by the CIA venture capital firm, In-Q-Tel. We knew they were selling our information. We knew they were a bad deal, all around: so, welcome to the club!

Guess what: there’s more organizations and technologies out there who are just as bad – for you, for your freedom, for our society, for free speech .. take your pick! If you are serious about reclaiming your privacy and taking a bit of power back from the technology giants, there is much more to do.

You should drop these providers IMMEDIATELY.

  • Google
  • Microsoft
  • Apple / OS x / iOS
  • Youtube
  • Twitter
  • Netflix
  • Reddit
  • Android
  • Alexa etc. (Slap yourself.)
  • Smart Phones, in their entirety (yes really.)

Why do these guys make the list?

Spying. Censorship. The sale of your user data to external entities. Wholesale data sharing with intelligence agencies. The cataloging of every word you type (or speak!) Shaping of the discussion. Banning ideas they disagree with. Dictating which content you can and cannot see! And so much more.

If you’ve recently dropped facebook, good for you. Now that you’re aware: take a look at your other technical providers and STOP using those who are stealing from you, and stealing from us all. Our technological future is being shaped by organizations and individuals who do NOT have our best interests at heart.

The time to take a stand is now. Actually you're way behind the curve, but better late than never.

It is getting harder and harder to distance ourselves from the spy nation. Never was a Fbooker. 🐓🐓

You forgot the most important thing people can be doing if they are American. Getting with their local committee of Safety and putting forth the law. nationallibertyalliance.org has a great civics course so you know actually what the law is. We don't actually want to be in the position that you find Europe in. Example writing letters to the criminals asking them not to be criminals. It is not funny and is actually what is happening.

Sounds like good advice indeed.

I fully agree with everything you say! But Im so damn lazy to organize all my digital stuff properly myself... I know one day I will slap myself in the face for being so lazy on this stuff! Im not an expert but certainly not a layman. Imagine all the people that don’t understand the scale of what is going on, that don’t even know there are alternatives to OSx or MS. That there is something called unix or a terminal.

Im also curious what will happen when a place like steemit gets momentum and big corporations discover the benefits of abusing it somehow. This is not unrealistic right? Or am I forgetting some mechanism that would naturally counteract that?

They are already well on their way. Things like bitcoin futures show one way in which they can throw a wrench into things. Big business will try and subvert anything that threatens their models: of this you can be sure!

At this point, one has got to be pretty lazy, intellectually, to not know a bit about this stuff. Five years ago, fine .. but today, there is really very little excuse. Well, a million excuses, none of them good.

Nice post and very true. I can't figure out why people want an Alexa (or any similar products) in their house. I'm sure it's because I've read too much dystopian literature, but Alexa just seems like a horrible idea.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you!!

I'm with you on that one. The idea of a device listening to your every word kind of freaks me out, and I won't have it!

I run Ubuntu, not windows, and use duckduckgo for a search engine. I have to have a cell phone for work calls, so slap slap slap, but everything I can is deactivated. I am looking at damaging the internal gps module. I pull the battery when I can to piss them off. Here is a nice game, sign up for a data mining site, but vary the signup information every time, and be sure nothing is correct. I am 1 to 110, every gender they allow me to check, 100 pounds to 350 pounds, and have every kind of car ever made as a security question. They can NOT ignore data as they must assume hand entered data is good, that is their weakness. If everyone enters 200 bogus profiles, we can crash their databases! HAVE FUN, LOL!

Not too shabby! Good work! I assume you use a vpn and proxy server at all times? I do the same thing with data.. usually I am a 100+ year old woman.

PS Check out openbsd.

Not all the time, it is more confusing that way, but the duckduckgo search engine combines all the searches made into one address. Then the do not keep the data, so there is no backtrack through them. That is one of the reasons they have to assume good data, it LOOKS good, LOL! I think I will be 130 lbs this time, and living in downtown Portland, I will have to look up a fancy hotel for an address; I feel expensive tonight!

I will look at openbsd, always good to find another tool, LOL!

One other fun one is to stop by a Library, when time permits, and use their equipment. A lot of local businesses have open WiFii, and that stirs the pot too. I hit several when she is having her nails done, and I am boored, ROFLOL!

Currently erasing my account, and man, does it take some time! Don't trust them to do it for me so I'm having to do it myself. Found a plugin for Firefox -- Greasemonkey -- that supposedly deletes posts, but not having much success and so I'm having to do most of it by hand. Would recommend anyone to try and really delete just a few past posts: I reckon it's the best way to understand the extent to which you do not own your own content once it is on Facebook...

Good deal man. Hopefully a lot of people follow your lead. Would be just lovely to see facebook drop about 80% of its value.
