Some Super Useful Websites You Might Not Have Heard Of 那些你没听过但是超级有用的网站

in #technology7 years ago (edited)
This is an old article I posted on smzdm.com in Chinese. I know this is not the normal photography stuff I post, but I'm a huge geek, so I thought I'd post this just to see what happens. Just to keep this as short as possible, I will only be posting the English version here. If you are interested in the Chinese version, please head to this link. Thank you for understanding!

Everyone knows how to browse the interwebs, but we mostly just go on the websites we know + Google, and there are so many extremely useful websites hiden on the interwebs, this time, I will introduce to you 10 websites that are lesser known, but super useful. Of course, some of you might already know some of these sites.

1. 10 Minute Mail

Screen Shot 2017-03-20 at 9.53.09 PM.png

It's an email address that will exist for 10 minutes, and it's destroyed after that. It's perfect for when a website asks you to subscribe/register before you can download or read, but you might never ever go on there again, or you won't be needing to receive any emails from them in the future. No one wants a whole bunch of random stuff in their inbox. What? They want you to verify the email? Don't worry, you can receive emails with 10 Minute Mail.

However, if it's an important site or a site you would go on regularly, just register with your own email, unless you are 100% certain you won't be needing that email address ever again.

2. lmgtfy (Let Me Google That For You)

Screen Shot 2017-03-30 at 10.18.54 PM.png

You can pretty much tell from the name what it's for. If you are tech savvy (like me, not to brag), or good at anything, I'm sure you'll get friends asking you questions about that thing you are good at alllllllll the time, and most of the time, it just needs a simple search online. But, you might be too shy to tell them to just google it, or you are just feeling your inner prankster. Then just go on this site, type in the question, and send your friend the link, when they open the link, they will see this.

Hopefully this will stop them from bugging you for the simplest questions ever again.

3. Hotel Wi-Fi Test

Screen Shot 2017-03-20 at 10.40.22 PM.png

What's the worst thing that can happen at the hotel these days? Bad service? Noooooo. Bad internet? YES! So when you are booking your next trip, go on this website first to check how fast the internet is in your ideal hotel. And when you see a hotel with fast internet, you can just click on the TripAdvisor icon to check out the reviews without having to search for them again.

4. Down for Everyone or Just Me

Screen Shot 2017-03-30 at 10.53.39 PM.png

We run into this situation quite often: all of a sudden you can't open a certain website, but is it just you or is it the same for everyone else? Time to pull out this site and type in the url to check if the website is actually having issues. Most the time, it might be just you.

5. scr.im

We all get tons and tons of junk mails in all of our email boxes, but a lot of them came from nowhere - you didn't sign up on those websites or subscribed to them. That's because you've left your email addresses in plain text somewhere on the internet, and there are bots that are scanning the internet all the time specifically to find email addresses. scr.im is to convert your email address into a short url, therefore, there's no @ in the address, and you will be at mercy of the scanning bots.

When people need to see your email address, they just need to click on the link, and do the verification, then voila!

6. Account Killer

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.02.25 AM.png

This is not a site that teaches you how to hack into people's accounts. It's for helping you to delete your accounts on different websites. A lot of websites make it extremely difficult to delete your account, this is when this website comes in handy. Just search the website you have your account on, and it'll likely have a tutorial for that. However, there are a few places that won't let you delete your account, and they also have solutions for that.

7. Skiplagged

Many of you might know this site already, but you might not know they are actually quite different compare to SkyScanner. They use a loophole in airlines' pricing strategy called Hidden City Ticketing to find you the cheapest flight. It works especially well in the US.

skiplagged.png

What it does is that it would find you tickets going from city A to city B, but the catch here is normal websites will only show you tickets from city A to city B, and don't show you the tickets going from city A to city C that stops at city B, and those tickets are generally a lot cheaper.

United Airlines even sued SkipLagged for this, but obviously failed. It also can help you find round trip tickets that are not sold in bundles but cheaper than the bundles.

8. Old Version

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.16.00 AM.png

All geeks know that the new versions of softwares or apps are not necessarily the best version, and this website make it easy for you to download the older versions. Simple as that. You can find almost any softwares on there for any system, and most softwares on there can be dated back to their original release, now that's impressive.

9. Instructables

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.28.41 AM.png

A website that takes DIY to a whole new level. You can find how-tos on this site for almost anything (of course, nothing illegal, you naughty naughty). After you find the specific tutorial, you can also download it as a PDF for printing.

10. WeTransfer

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 2.38.43 AM.png

You must have run into this before - sorry, the file exceeded the max attachment limit. Uploading it onto dropbox is a good solution, but not the best solution. The free version of WeTransfer let's you send multiple files up to 2GB in total to 20 emails max using your own email address, available for 7 days. If you use it often, you can upgrade to the plus version which is 12USD/month and 120USD/year, it let's you send max 100GB files at a time, available for 4 weeks in default, you can also extend it to forever, and you can manage your files.
