My old desktop needed to be replaced.

So I started ordering some parts when the new Ryzen 7 Zen+ CPU's got released last week.

The components

My new desktop is gonna be custom built, with new parts I buy and a few old parts from the old desktop.

These parts are:

  • CPU: Ryzen 7 2700 (new)
  • Motherboard: ASUS PRIME X470-PRO (new)
  • RAM: 16 GB Dual channel 2666 MHz Crucial Sports LT (new)
  • Case: Corsair Spec-Alpha R/B (new)
  • Power Supply: 400W Corsair (new?)
  • GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 1060 3 GB (old)
  • SSD: 120 GB Kingston HyperX (old)
  • HDD: 2 TB Western Digital 7200 rpm (old)

The setup

I'm going to put this baby together myself and I had to buy the items in the order they became available.

So that would be, Case -> PSU -> CPU -> Motherboard -> RAM.

I am gonna be using an old SSD and an old HDD, but I am going to re-install my OS.

So the layout is gonna be:

SSD: /dev/sda (with the OS and Home folder)

  • /dev/sda1: 512 MB EFI partition
  • /dev/sda2: 120 GB Root+Home partition

HDD: /dev/sdb (with data folders symlinked into the home folder)

  • /dev/sdb1: 2 TB data partition, with folders called:
    • Video
    • Pictures
    • Downloads
    • Steam
    • Games
    • More if I see a need.

The finished build

The finished build has cost me around $980.

It contains mostly new parts.

I can sell the old PC afterwards for a couple of hundred.

The finished build is gonna be almost double the performance of the old.

The new build will use less power than the old.

The new build has options for expansion. It supports M.2 drives and more RAM.
