Importers say retailers in the retail market are getting more than Tk 1 thousand per kilo by selling these dates.
On Wednesday, the importers of Khatunganj of Chittagong sold a total of Tk 1,600 to the wholesale traders of Azwa Khajur. Packages of these dates are being sold in different cities of Dhaka, Chittagong and in some of the city's elite stores at Tk. 2,800. 300 gm of plastic packets packed in the country's famous supermarket.
Another date for imported from Saudi Arabia is 'Ambar'. The 400 g packet is sold at Tk 1,100. The price of the kg is Tk 2,750. However, the importers of this date are selling at Tk. 500. The price difference between each kg is Tk 1,250.
Faruk Trade International's Faruk Ahmed, the importer of dates, said in the first light that the prices of Azawa or Amba dates are being sold at Khatunganj, the retail price should not be more than 100-200kg per kg. Although the cost of preserving, transporting and packaging of dates is not normal, the retail price is not so much a normal price in retail market.
According to customs data, dates are now imported from 17 countries of the world.
