Last night I watched an episode of the documentary Planes That Change The World in National Geographic Chanel that discusses sophisticated US reconnaissance aircraft SR-71 named Blackbird. SR-71 or Blackbird is a supersonic reconnaissance aircraft that has speed about 3,400 km/h or three times the of speed sound. This aircraft can fly to 24,000 meters height or 80,000 ft and can avoid enemy radar. Due to the extremely high speed and heat generation to temperatures of up to 400 degrees of Celsius, the 80 percent of aircraft's body are made of titanium, the material which high temperature and corrosive resistant. I remember in the fertilizer plant, urea reactor materials and ures pipes are also made of titanium.

The SR-71 was made by a company called Lockheed and was designed by Kelly Johnson, a very innovative engineer. The aircraft was first tested on December 22, 1964 by pilot Bob Gilliland, on the documentary Gilliland also appeared as a resource.

Blackbirds were built when the United States engaged in a cold war with the Soviet, but ironically most of the titanium was actually bought from the Soviet and until the Blackbird retired it never flew to spy on the Soviet's sky, which was the main purpose of its manufacture. Although it has been tested in 1964 but this project was kept secret, many people saw this airplane flying and they spreading rumors about UFO aircraft.

President Lyndon. B. Johnson finally released a speech introducing Blackbird. At first the aircraft was named RS (Reconnaissance Strategic) -71 but President Johnson misread SR-71 instead of RS-71 so it was decided to change the name of the aircraft to SR-71, because it was easier to change the name of the aircraft rather than correct the mistake of the President's speech.

The aircraft carried out spy missions and mapped targets in several wars including the Vietnam and Afghanistan wars. It is estimated, Blackbird is also involved in the Gulf War. However, due to high operational and maintenance costs, the United States Government decided to retire the SR-71 in 1998.

Currently this plane can be found at the Aerospace Museum. Even if you see sophisticated planes in the X-Men and Transformer movies and think it's a plane from the future you are wrong, because it is the legendary Blackbird, which has been used by CIA intelligence missions since 1964.[]

Semalam saya menonton salah satu episode film dokumenter Planes That Change The World yang membahas tentang pesawat pengintai canggih milik Amerika Serikat yaitu SR-71 yang dijuluki Blackbird. SR-71 atau dikenal dengan Blackbird merupakan pesawat pengintai supersonik yang memiliki kecepatan sekitar 3.400 km/jam atau tiga kali kecepatan suara. Pesawat ini dapat terbang mencapai ketinggian 24.000 meter atau 80.000 ft dan dapat menghindari radar musuh. Karena kecepatan yang sangat tinggi dan menimbulkan panas hingga temperatur mencapai 400 derajat celcius, maka 80 persen body pesawat dibuat dari titanium yang tahan temperatur tinggi dan tidak korosif. Saya ingat di pabrik pupuk, material reaktor urea dan pipa-pipa yang dilewati urea juga terbuat dari titanium.

SR-71 dibuat oleh perusahaan bernama Lockheed dan dirancang oleh Kelly Johnson,seorang engineer yang sangat inovatif. Walaupun sudah diuji coba pada tahun 1964 namun proyek ini dirahasiakan, banyak orang melihat pesawat ini terbang dan berkembang rumor tentang pesawat UFO. Presiden Lyndon. B. Johnson akhirnya merilis pidato memperkenalkan Blackbird. Pada awalnya pesawat ini bernama RS (Reconnaissance Strategic)-71 namun Presiden Johnson salah menyebutkan RS-71 menjadi SR-71 sehingga diputuskan untuk mengganti nama pesawat menjadi SR-71, karena lebih mudah mengubah nama pesawat dibandingkan memperbaiki pidato Presiden.

Pesawat ini melakukan misi pengintaian dan mempetakan target di beberapa perang antara lain perang Vietnam dan Afganistan. Diperkirakan, Blackbird juga terlibat dalam perang teluk. Namun karena biaya operasional dan maintenance yang tinggi, Pemerintah Amerika Serikat memutuskan untuk mempensiunkan SR-71 pada tahun 1998. Saat ini pesawat ini dapat ditemukan di Museum dirgantara. Bahkan jika kamu melihat pesawat canggih di film X-Men dan Transformer dan berpikir itu adalah pesawat yang dari masa depan maka kamu salah besar, karena itu adalah Blackbird yang legendaris, yang telah digunakan oleh misi intelegen CIA sejak tahun 1964.[]
