Embodiment
The condition of the majority of soil resources in the world ranges between very poor to fair as a direct result of anthropogenic activities, deforestation being one of the leading causes. One third of all land is severely degraded. The present rate of soil degradation exceeds the rate of soil formation while the rate of deforestation surpasses the rate of tree growth. Compromised soil quality leads to desertification, the inability to grow nourishing crops, prevention of water filtration and greenhouse gases regulation. Loss of trees contributes to uncertain levels of oxygen availability, increased amounts of greenhouse gases, water cycle disruption and the destruction of habitats essential for the survival of millions of species. In short, at current rates of soil degradation and deforestation, life on Earth, including human life, would be severely threatened in 300 years from now unless measures are taken to prevent extreme survival hardship and possible extinction.
Cocoon
Fortunately, the Land Life Company has already invented a product called the Cocoon - recycled paper pulp-based biodegradable planter which allows for trees to be planted in areas covered with degraded soil. The planting process is simple and takes only several hours per tree while follow-up maintenance or irrigation are not required. The probability of Cocoon trees surviving is 80-95% compared to 0-40% using traditional planting methods and its cost is 3-10 times less. The price of one device is U.S. $9 (excluding shipping) with a minimal order of 24 in the United States and 10 to all remaining countries.
While we encourage humanity to find creative ways to support and utilize the Cocoon technology to plant trees in areas covered by degraded soils, we would also like to extend a reminder that, simultaneously to restoring Earth’s balance, it might be wise to begin focusing on inventing and implementing eco-conscious means of living. Otherwise, we may be only delaying the inevitable.
