A brief overview of Artificial Intelligence and its Application

Introduction


Google will soon develop self-driving cars that are capable enough to identify drunk passengers. It will use advance Artificial Intelligence like pick up location, pick-up time and users interaction with cars application before taking a decision.

The term Artificial Intelligence is used a bit too easily nowadays, especially, among non-ai professionals, anything that reflects a high level of intelligence is easily referred to as Artificial Intelligence, even when the main characteristic of intelligence is the capability to adapt to new situations.

The main reason why Artificial Intelligence was proposed is to incorporate an agent into the computing machine in order to mimics and carries out human intelligence in every sense, since most of what human beings do with their natural intelligence is very difficult to model and execute on a computer system, because computer system as of that time followed traditional programming.

Today, we shall briefly explore the world of Artificial Intelligence and some of the Artificial Intelligence invented so far will also be discussed.


Driving into subject matter


Artificial intelligence can simply be referred to as machine intelligence, which basically means an intelligence displayed by machines which is similar or somehow the same or related with the natural intelligence displayed by human beings and other animals.

In computing field, for a system or machine to be called an Artificial Intelligence, such system must have an "intelligent agents" which must be able to perceive its environment and takes necessary actions that maximize its chance of success at some goal.

With the current advancement in Information and Communication Technology, nobody has been able to create General Artificial Intelligence that truly mimics and carries out human intelligence in every sense. What is in trend is called Narrow Artificial Intelligence.


Techniques of Artificial Intelligence


The followings techniques and sub-fields of Artificial Intelligence are currently referred to as Artificial Intelligence but not all Artificial Intelligence can be referred to each of them:

  1. Machine Learning
  2. Natural Language Processing
  3. Expert systems
  4. Vision
  5. Speech
  6. Planning
  7. Robotics

To have a better understanding of how Artificial Intelligence works without discussing its detail technicalities, it behooves to talk about typical examples of today's Artificial Intelligence.


Inside the mechanical brain of Robot Sophia

Robot Sophia, has been confirmed to be the most advanced robot ever made and first artificial intelligent (AI) robot launched in 2014, It consists of a speech reciting robot which is usually pre-loaded with words-text bank in order that the robot can match and select from, by making use of the extracted keywords from the question or conversation when listening to the audience. The Robot is built using patented silicon skin to make a realistic facial expression in order to relate with humans in no time. Machine learning algorithms are also being used to match audience facial expressions.

A robotic chatbot. Sophia also sometimes runs a dialogue system, where it can look at people, listen to what they say, and choose a pre-written response based on what the person said, and other factors gathered from the internet like cryptocurrency price. source

Let's talk about Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Vehicles

Some years back, many people would not have believed a day where driver's seat will not be relevant. Today's application of artificial intelligence has made it possible to send a car on an errand without having a driver or a passenger, in fact, it is high time the cars manufacturing companies started thinking of how to remove driver's seat from the car architectural design.

The technique behind artificial intelligence self-driving car was deduced from human way of driving, humans need both visionary sensory organ and earing organ in order to be able to watch and listen to sound from the environment while driving, also is good memory to aid one in making a quick decision by learning from the old incidents on the roads.

the components in artificial intelligence self-driving car can be summarized below

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles, including camera-based machine vision systems, radar-based detection units, driver condition evaluation and sensor fusion engine control units (ECUs). source

A repetitive loop, called Perception-Action Cycle, is created when the autonomous vehicle generates data from its surrounding environment and feeds it into the intelligent agent, who in turn makes decisions and enables the autonomous vehicle to perform specific actions in that same environment. source


Artificial Intelligence and Social Networking

Today's application of Artificial Intelligence in social media networking can never be overlooked. Facebook is a typical example of social media websites which relies much on Artificial Intelligence to recognize users faces. For instance, When a user uploads images through his/her account on Facebook, most times, the faces will be highlighted and suggesting friends to the user for tagging. It makes use of Artificial Neural Network, which is Machine learning algorithm to carry out such activities through pattern recognition. Also when showing users feed, Artificial Intelligence is being used to choose the posts which may interest the users based on what posts the users have liked or commented on in the past.

Pinterest uses computer vision, an application of AI where computers are taught to “see”, in order to automatically identify objects in images (or “pins”) and then recommend visually similar pins. Other applications of machine learning at Pinterest include spam prevention, search and discovery, ad performance and monetization, and email marketing. source

Instagram and Snapchart also rely so much on Machine Learning, for instance, Instagram uses Machine Learning to translate an emoji into its contextual meaning.


Conclusion


We have briefly discussed Artificial Intelligence with few examples of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in today's technology, numerous examples like : Google’s AI-Powered Predictions, Plagiarism Checkers, Voice-to-Text, Smart Personal Assistants, Banking/Personal Finance, Video Games, Fraud Detection are only mentioned but not discussed in detail. Industrial application of Artificial Intelligence is far beyond what I have explored here, no doubt, more research needs to be carried out in order to be able to develop General Artificial Intelligence.

The driverless/autonomous vehicles you mentioned can yet be able to do away with drivers seat as you have suggested above. However, since the concept is still in its testing stage, it will be great looking forward to the idea you'd presented.

Advances have even gone way beyond just Artificial Intelligence; and very soon, we could be witnessing advances in Artificial General Intelligence (Strong AI or Full AI).

But the ultimate destination is the Artificial Super Intelligence; where machines would achieve full awareness. And that could be the dawn of singularity.
