Apple - one of the most successful companies in the world - is coming out with their own augmented reality smartglasses.

Last year, Bloomberg reported that Apple was developing an augmented reality headset that was due to be released by 2020. It would have its own display, a brand new chip and even an Apple-specific operating system. Now, according to CNET, the tech giant may be bundling in virtual reality capabilities for their new product.

Most interestingly, the report also states that the headset is going to have an 8K resolution display in each eye. On top of that, the device would connect wirelessly to a dedicated box and would not require placing cameras in the room like similar devices.

Strangely enough, this clashes with Tim Cook's previous comments about virtual and augmented reality. Specifically, he stated that virtual reality has a "lower commercial interest over time" than augmented reality. Whether or not he's right will only be made clear as time goes on.

While CNET doesn't cite a specific source, they offered plenty of details that make it seem that the leak is legitimate. As is standard for Apple products, the headset would be on the higher end of consumer devices - much like the rest of Apple products. This new platform could inevitably lead to a slew of new apps, much like the smartwatch failed to do.

Perhaps the most important question regarding this new development is - what will the glasses look like? With lightweight options like Google Glass and Snapchat Spectacles failing to make any headway, it's likely that Apple will opt for a larger device. Especially when considering the fact that they plan to integrate virtual reality features with it as well - this requires total user immersion which can only be achieved with a larger headset.

In the past, these massive companies have missed the mark on their projects by a long shot. Google Glass and Spectacles were both massive failures, though for different reasons. Apple, on the other hand, is known for extremely high quality products.

Based on the information in this leak, it seems to us that this headset will be more on the virtual reality side than the augmented reality one. The super-high resolution and VR capability seem to imply that it will be for home use and not be something that users will want to wear in public.
