The country where to drive Tesla is cheap

Marte Skogstad Algoth returns to the Norwegian capital of Oslo after a period spent in London. It does not take long before the lady realizes that driving a car relying on gas is expensive.

To her surprise, Algot finds that in Norway it is cheaper to drive a fully electric Tesla Model S than the hybrid model Toyota Prius.

"When we calculate how much we spend on tolls and fuel, it goes like we're giving an equivalent amount to Model S," she told CNBC.

"I still can not believe that by buying what I think is expensive - a luxury car, there is a much bigger economic sense than having a Prius," she says.

Fully electric vehicles in Norway are exempt from tolls.

"The Tol is electronic, so you do not notice the Norwegian 53 dollar fee, but when you see the bill at the end of the month, you're wondering if it's worth it," Alogoth explains.

Her solution to this problem is to buy Tesla Model S, which is sold against the "modest" amount of $ 80,000. Unlikely or not, the fourth most popular car in Norway is even the more expensive Model X, which is traded for $ 125,000.

Tesla is not the only hybrid or electric car brand in Norway.

In 2017 - and for the first time in history, electric and hybrid models formed more than half of all new car sales in the country.

The switch to electric cars in the Scandinavian side is extremely fast in 2017. Sales of electric and hybrid models last year rose 52% year-on-year, according to Norwegian Road Federation (OFV) data.

Norway is a country rich in oil, where the local population enjoys a high standard of living, but the real reason for the transition to luxury electric cars lies in the fact that they are exempt from taxes on the sale of a car.
