Buying Bitcoins - Real Coins as in minted Bitcoin

in #technology7 years ago

Bitcoin or any digital token or cryptocurrency was never made to print in physical coins. I have seen a few website articles where people are actually holding a physical coin and I decided to do a bit of googling and I found a few articles around this.

Casacius Coins

It is actually a pity that the they decided to stop printing these coins as of Nov 27 2013, as they were actually very nice looking coins. Most of us could probably not afford a 25 Bitcoin coin in any way :) in my opinion the sudden rise in Bitcoin, must've made it close to impossible to get your timing right for the printing.

How they work:

Casascius 2-Factor Gold-Plated Savings Bar Dress your Bitcoins for tomorrow, make them look their best in your vault today. Would weigh about 12 ounces if it were solid gold, this is a 4.2-ounce metal alloy bar with gold plating. A neat-looking novelty that looks unmistakably valuable. Available as a pre-loaded 100 BTC bar, as well as a non-denominated savings bar. Two-factor encryption is available at no charge. Bar is 80mm x 40mm x 6mm.

These Casacius coins actually contains the wallet private key as it is embedded within the coin :) Very clever indeed. The private key is protected by a hologram which will show the owner that it was tampered with. There is also two factor authentication available with these coins :) I just love it.

The bad part of this story is that the creator of these coins were forced to stop printing these coins by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, as they deemed this a money transmitter business.

Denarium Coins

Another great coin is the Finland based Denarium coin. It works in a similar fashion as the Casacius Coins with tamper proof holograms and you can purchase these coins as E-type, which is an empty coin or L-Type, which is loaded coins.

Satori Coin

The third one is the Satori coin and I do not really like the look of these coins but I just love their slogan:

Value does not exist outside the consciousness of man

Paper Wallets

In one of my earlier articles, I explained the various types of CryptoWallets and these coins are not much different from a Paper Wallet, especially the Dearium e-Type Coin.

This is cool to own but understand these holograms are not perfect and you shouldn't put too much money into these coins. This is sort of like using a fax to communicate with the Internet. The sooner you forget about physical coins and get used to digital transactions the better. Still very cool though as something to show your friends, like my collection of Zimbabwe's billions of dolars ;)
See, I'm already a trillionaire!

Neat novelty! Thanks for posting

Yip, quit a "fancy" way of having a paper wallet or a regular hardware wallet...
I personally haven't played with any hardware wallets but might look into purchasing one (using paper wallets for now)...
How do you keep/store your BTC @jacor?

The last one looks like chips in Casino :) The first one looks very solid indeed, although in real life I hate coins .

You've captured my attention.

The coins look great, but i don't think they'll be much more than a novelty.

BitFlip

great post, thanks for this valuable info!
