Flying cars don't exist yet, but one company already wants to race them in the desert

Alauda is an Australian Startup company which has flown into the mainstream with its ambitious plans to not only build flying cars, but also to start a sport for people who want to fly racing cars. It plans to host the first Airspeeder (flying car) Test Race in 2018 and the first Airspeeder World Championship in 2020. Due to the high costs involved with such a project, Alauda has turned to Kickstarter for help funding the project.

Kickstarter pledges range from $5 to $13,000, and pledges can receive anything from an Airspeeder cap to an advertisement on an Alauda Speeders wing in the first Airspeeder Test Race in 2018.

Alauda has spent two years in Sydney, Australia refining and building prototypes. The team spent a lot of time ensuring the flying car would meet government regulations and have a sleek, sporty design. Finally, Aluada has gone public with the Alauda Airspeeder MK1. It has top speeds of 250km/h and can reach an altitude of 3.5km.

The Alauda MK1 prototype is a single-seater and uses the same battery technology as in the Tesla Model S. Alauda says that the term "Airspeeder" denotes the blend between the utility of a car and a plane, and they plan to take the term "Airspeeder" from science fiction to a new vehicle category.
