On 25 March 2006, a Wiki group was formed by the Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN) to popularize Wikipedia nationwide. The goal was to introduce Bangla to the world court through Wikipedia and to create a full encyclopedia in Bangla. At that time, there were only 500 articles in the Bengali Wikipedia. But a few more people joined the 'BDSOSN Wiki Team'. The group started spreading Wikipedia's message through some newspapers and started operating a Bangla wiki mailing list. Soon, many Bengali-speaking countries of the country and abroad started joining this dynamic project. As a result, by the end of October, the Bengali Wikipedia touched the milestone of 10 thousand articles. In the South Asian language Wikipedia, the Bengali Wikipedia first reached this milestone.
In the middle of 2009 and 2010, Bengali-speaking Bengalis of India started contributing to the Bengali Wikipedia. At the same time, the Wikimedia Foundation started their journey and in October 2011 the Wikimedia Foundation approved a local section in Bangladesh to promote educational content in Bengal.
