10 Major Technological Revolutions, The World Awaits in 2018

But, we also witnessed instances where technologies that were thought as giant revolutions tasted failure and didn't get much public attention. Google Glass, Self Driving Car, Virtual Reality are just a few of them. From 2013, it was predicted and expected that they were going to change the world, but nothing really happened. Even though Virtual Reality got some attention from the people and actually became affordable by the common man, it wasn't celebrated as a 'revolution' that's capable of changing the world by the idea that the real experiences can't just be replaced with anything else.
Bitcoin, Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things were few among the possible revolutionary technologies that were predicted in 2017. Making history in its price, even if the Bitcoin was grown to the 'moon' last year, the thing that actually made a base for a technical revolution can only be claimed by the cornerstone of all the cryptocurrencies, The Blockchain Technology.
Fulfilling the predictions, artificial intelligence made its debut in all regions possible. With the arrival of Sofia (The Robot), The real possibilities of AI were converged to a dramatic product and killing the job opportunities and the fear that AI may hurt a human being also were discussed globally as a part of the AI revolution.
IOT, even though grown by improving the solutions for the basic needs of men, it couldn't bring out a revolution as a product or a service. But, products such as Google Home and Amazone Echo did show us the initial view of the capability of IOT technology.
At the same time, sectors we never expected, were developed dramatically and found new opportunities in 2017. The most important among them is the Cyber Security. The WannaCry attack and the series of hacking events that followed it made the Cyber Security a hot topic. It established new concepts and awareness about cybersecurity among the people. Beliefs such as Hackers and Ransomware will only target giant companies were changed due to such events. Majority of people became responsible and self-aware about the privacy and internet security, thus security agencies became more vigilant about the security risks that may be caused by the cybercriminals. The cyber world became a lot more secure after the half of 2017.
2018
Hopes and dreams are not ending. Even though the ending of a year and start of a new year is technically the same, technology and science are ready to utilize the opportunities it brings, completely. The predictions and observations about of new technologies that may change the world happen every year. And most of them kept justice with the predictions too.
Technologies that are expected to conquer the world in 2018 are:
1. BlockChain
It doesn't matter whatever happens to the Bitcoin, it won't affect the BlockChain. The blockchain is going to start getting independent from the wonder of cryptocurrencies and is going to be used in applications that will surely influence our daily lives. BlockChain will find its way to Governing Institutions, Banks, Hospitals, Education for storing data and marking transactions by eradicating scams and ensuring transparency.
2. Narrow AI
This year also Artifical Intelligence will continue its growth it did for years. The change from the 'all-knowing' Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) to Narrow AI will pique interest. The platforms that utilize AI that is designed to do a specific task or that is expert in a certain context are going to achieve high scale growth.
3. Augmented Reality (AR)
Augmented Reality will actually become more popular this year. The AR chip that is going to find its place in the future smartphones is going to make Augmented Reality listed in the basic services provided by it. Increasing the probability of AR revolutions in Art, Media, and Education the presence of AR in phones makes it more acceptable to the mass.
4. Self Driving Car
Self Driving Cars will find their space on US roads this year. It is now ready for the run and has been developing to this stage by correcting the mistakes and bugs through test drives in selected paths for the last three years. The Google's Waymo Cars that have been recognized and supported legally will start running in US Arizona this year.
5. HyperLoop
HyperLoop that is being built by Elon Musk's The Boring Company is expected to conduct it's vacuum tunnel journey this year. If men who did their journeys through the land, water, and air travel through the vacuum tunnel that is being built under the earth in lightning speed, then it will be one of the biggest revolutions this year.
But, since there are a couple of steps remains before the journey is realized, HyperLoop travel services will remain among the top ones in the list of expectations this year.
6. 5G
5G technology is awaiting the release by completing its testing period successfully. If the base for the service is developed, we can expect the release of 5G this year itself in countries across the globe. With a lot more times the speed of 4G, 5G will play a vital role in the development of technologies such as IOT. More than industries, 5G will influence the common man. As the 5G becomes cheaper than 4G services, traditional broadband services will migrate to 5G.
7. Internet Of Things
For the last 3 years through technological advancements, IOT has become a technology area that brings huge hope to the table. IOT sector will see huge developments this year. If the people need to start using the IOT on a large scale, we still need to travel a quite long journey.
But countries across the world are testing out IOT in large scale and several IOT Companies and Startups have grown into world standards too.
8. Quantum Computing
Situations have become pleasing for Quantum Computing, which has been a wonder in academics to be more accessible. The power of quantum computing and the opportunities it brings with it will improve the key sectors of services. By doing a lot of tasks in short time span, it opens up new ways for faster research and data collection in Climate, Medical, Space studies.
9. Surgical Robot
It was proved in 2017, that robots that do the treatment without even a minute mistake that is prescribed by the Doctor are far more efficient than the robots that prescribe the treatment. Robots which does operations that last for hours will find more places in the operations theaters in hospitals across the world this year. The errors that may happen in long surgeries by humans due to tiredness and lack of concentration can be avoided with the help of robotic surgeries. Surgical robots built by Google joined with Johnson & Johnson, and Verb Surgicals will be released this year.
10. Computational Photography
What couldn't be achieved with Lenses and Megapixels are done with the help of Computer Softwares and Artificial Intelligence by creating wonderful pictures is the job of Computational Photography. While the majority of the Smartphone manufacturers are bringing out phones with Dual-Cameras and special sensors to improve the quality of the picture, with just 12 Megapixel single camera Google's Pixel 2 creates beautiful images with the help of Computational Photography. This technology is going to revolutionize the level of quality of photography.

2017 was an amazing year in technological advancement, looking forward to mind blowing innovation in the year 2018.
There are some amazing possibilities listed here for 2018... but a "self-driving car"?... I don't trust technology enough to get into one of those anytime soon!!
Yes, I agree with you and a majority of the people think like that too, because at some points in driving we may have to take decisions concerning lives, and I don't think it is a good idea to give that power to a machine.
But it's a fact that they are finding their place on the road this year. Let's wait and see how it goes.
Self-driving cars are closer than we/many want to accept. Closer to regulatory approval than ever too. Even with the limited (or so we think) tech currently implemented already, Tesla’s track record on autopilot (which isn’t autopilot officially) is as good as the human driving record in the USA in the terms of fatalities.
The ethical debate about hit the pavement to escape a frontal collision, or go frontal, will highly likely be settled by regulators IMHO. improving safety standards and results of crash tests will help make those decisions. A computer operating at the speed they do in a Tesla can compute whether the impact will go beyond the crumple zone or not and decide based on that. I expect that computation will become a requirement. And, of course, luckily not every time a human is also on the escape trajectory.
Programmed AI bias will be an interesting topic to follow but it will also be an awesome, and ethical, application for big data.
