According to one analyst, the price of the iPhone 8 is largely related to the place that Samsung takes in the manufacture of OLED screens.

A few days before Apple's keynote, scheduled for September 12, rumors converge around a tariff of about 1000 dollars - probably more than 1000 euros in France - for the iPhone 8. A price that will be significantly higher than those of other iPhone, without edge-to-edge OLED display. Unsurprisingly, this new slab will alone increase the bill. But according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, cited by the site MacRumors, Apple mainly pays the fact of having only one supplier, Samsung.

$ 75 more per iPhone

Faced with the huge volumes that Apple will have to deliver, only the South Korean is currently able to grant a sufficient number of production lines. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the Californian must pay 120 to 130 dollars (100 to 110 euros) for each screen. Until now, his LCD screens were billed 45 to 55 dollars (38 to 46 euros). The cost of production would therefore increase by $ 75 for each iPhone OLED. A figure to which must be added the cost of transportation, marketing, distribution, taxes and the comfortable margin of Apple, about 40%.



According to Ming-Chi Kuo, diversifying its sources of supply is now an imperative for Apple, now too dependent on Samsung. The firm headed by Tim Cook did not wait for the analyst's advice to change the situation. According to the Korea Economic Daily newspaper, Apple would have invested $ 2.67 billion (2.24 billion euros) to buy OLED screen production lines at LG. The contract would cover 45,000 screens per month from 2019. Since Apple sold more than 40 million iPhones (all models) in the second quarter of 2017, LCD screens should keep a place of choice in its shops.
