RE: Why I am not posting much at the moment?

in #technic5 years ago

Had the backlight problem ("flexgate") three weeks ago, I bought my macbook pro just 14 months ago directly from Apple but Apple refuses to pay anything of the 510€ cost to replace the screen since it's past the 1 year warranty. It's clearly a quality problem and the worst customer service that I've experienced in a long time, I'm considering selling my macbook and switching to a Linux laptop now. The repair ate up one month of my travel budget and I wasn't able to work for three weeks..

Wow this is strange. Where was it? Looks like it depends on which country you are. In Australia they were always super friendly and did not even discuss about this. The first time they fixed it in about 48hours because I had a flight out of the country.
Even more strange is the fact, that if you bought it just 14 month ago it should not have happened since they replaced the cable (which was way to short) and put in a longer one. That’s what I’ve found online.

Mine is a late 2016. yours?

Found the same thing, mine is mid-2018 (first quad-core model) but still has the same problem. On most other laptops a cable like this could be replaced cheaply, but MacBooks are so bad to repair that they needed to replace the whole upper part. I bought it in Taiwan and am now in Thailand, I though buying in Taiwan directly from Apple using the student discount while I was studying there was a good deal, but apparently customer service like it is offered by Amazon in Europe where they would even replace your laptop after the warranty expired is not a thing that Apple does since they want you to spend hundreds of dollars on Apple care..

That really sucks! I’m pretty sure they would have not helped me in Germany. Still wondering why they’re like that in Australia. As said, they were so friendly and now even going to replace more then what I’ve asked for. Anyway I’m also thinking of selling it as long as it is working. Still regret that I’ve sold my late 2011 MacBook Pro.

Short update in case you’re interested. Apple called me and told me it’s not the display this time but the logic board. Means I also have to pay 640$ for a new logic board now. That actually changes my mood a lot. Anyway can’t do anything about it.

Edit: I just learned today that Apple Australia has a 3 year Australia wide warranty and not only one year like most other countries.

Oh, that sucks.. Meanwhile, my newly replaced display has issues again (pixels going black at the bottom of the screen) and my macbook is back in the repair shop. Apple has some serious quality issues!

Seems like mine is a never ending story. Hope yours is not the same. I now have a new screen, new upper case with keyboard and battery and a new logic board. Still, sometimes when I open the screen, it takes a few seconds until I see my desktop or I have the famous Ameisenfussball for a second. It´s a Joke!
