Women in Tech

in #tech8 years ago

According to the Wall Street Journal Women make up 36.8% of entry-level workers in tech. The Harvard Business Review found that 50% of women in STEM fields will leave mid-career, hostility in the workplace is the most heavily cited reason for this.

Some argue that the percentages of women in STEM roles are low because they just aren’t interested in the fields, to this I say BULLSHIT

I am a part of these statistics. Speaking from experience machoism and gender bias is rampant in the Tech field and I have left a job because of this. However, I do see hope for women in these fields. There key players such as Cisco, Facebook, and Alcoa who are looking for ways to change their company cultures and utilize women in their workforce.

Steemit is another example of women in tech. Large numbers of women are writing articles and utilizing block chain technology. To all the women out there - Keep it up! We too can make our place in moving tech forward.

So how exactly were women oppressed for instance in open-source software?

Anyone with a computer and an internet connection could have become an expert programmer, given enough intelligence, enough persistence and enough time.

Yeah, Chad knows what you will say next. Society didn't/doesn't encourage girls/women to go into tech!

Guess what, it didn't encourage boys either. Boys interested in computers just 20 years ago were made fun of, ostracized, labeled losers and nerds, and ignored in a forgotten corner.

Now that the going is good, different story, eh ?

Dishonest posts like this are a disgrace to the intelligent women in technology who have actually earned their place by being smart and competent.

interesting. Why you think the opposition argues that women are just not interested in STEM? you got to realized that boys and girls groomed differently, that is why they boys and girls do not have the same interest. For example you don't see a lot of men becoming nurses or social workers. Why? I think this is due to way society raises us to be in a certain way. The women who have been successful in STEM, are women that took an interest in that field and were not ashamed by parents or society to pursuit their passions. I hope you are able to see where i'm going with this argument.

Excuse my English, not 1st language. Thanks

I hope my girls to be a special career woman.
