💡What is high performance computing?

in #tec6 years ago (edited)

🔹High-performance computing is carried out by complex software and hardware systems based on the methods of large-scale parallel processing to solve composite computational problems using computer modelling, simulation and data analysis. High-performance computing on the basis of complex software and hardware systems combines several technologies, including specific computer #architecture, programs and electronics, algorithms and application software, into a single system for fast and effective solution of challenging problems.

🔹While a personal computer or workstation typically contains a single processor (a central processor - CPU, for example), a high-performance computing system is essentially a network of processors (eg, CPU microprocessors), either of which contains a number of computational cores, as well as its own local storage for a wide range of programs.

🔹Programs which coders write to work on such complexes divide a composite task into many small independent computational tasks called "#threads" that can be executed simultaneously on these cores. So as to make existing software an effective computing tool, their cores must be well-configured for efficient data exchange, since a modern software suite can consist of more than 500 000 – 1 000 000 cores and more.

🔹High-performance computing is essential for modelling, for example, the behavior of complex, iterative, multidimensional physical systems, such as living cell dynamics and complex body organs, or the motion of aerospace vehicles, as they help identify interactions and processes (most of them are invisible to the researcher) which regulate the behavior of various components of these adaptive dynamic systems.

🔹Still there are a large sector of small and medium-sized enterprises(SME), engineering and design teams, small research institutes and individual scientists who need to use the products of high-performance computing technologies in their activities, but are not able to overcome the existing entry threshold into the traditional software market. In order to reduce the existing entry threshold to the minimum, we propose to build a global infrastructure for access to high-performance computing services for every Internet user on the planet. The global network based on the web platform "A-Platform" will become the basis for unique ecosystem which integrates the intellectual, professional, financial and scientific resources of the planet through the available high-performance computing services.
