Running goals update

in #teamsouthafrica6 years ago

Its been about 14 days since I posted about my running goals that I have made. See that post here.

Since then, I was lucky enough to go on holiday with my family to the coast which afforded me some additional time to spend running (in between a lot of good food and beers). Something that really worked in my favour was the change in altitude from where I live and normally run to where we were on holiday.

At home we are about 1700 metres (5700 ft) above sea level which means there is less oxygen. Then consider that at the coast (pretty much between 0 and 100 metres above sea level) there is a lot more oxygen, allowing for improved performances. Athletes from all over the world take advantage of this by training at a high altitude and then competing at lower elevations. Even though I am not some seasoned pro, I did notice that I felt faster and more energetic than I have the past few weeks.

As mentioned in my previous post, I was aiming to run a sub 1-hour 10km (at altitude) in the next month or so. It appears the sea air and holiday vibes inspired me to hit this goal sooner rather than later. Aided by a good downhill start I managed to get to my halfway point at 6.5km’s in just 34 minutes (about 5.20 min per km). I got to the 10km mark at around 58 minutes….RESULT! The rest of the run back was almost as pleasant except for the last 1.5km or so which was a steep uphill which I had to walk.

Overall, I feel my training is going well and I should be on track to run a good 10km race on the 12th August.

@gholsa, kudos for you! I hope you are still down there. If I am not mistaken, your run covered some beach at Umhlanga Rocks. Go and check out the beautiful wilderness trail to the left of that vast beach. You go through a little rain forest. I believe you will enjoy that immensely!

We plan to be at Umhlanga in about a month's time, and I plan to start getting fit whilst down there. Granted, I will only be walking fast, but that in itself is a goal if you are actually a couch potato!

Unfortunately I am back in the cold of Gauteng now. I think i know that forest, think its Hawaan forest next to the lagoon hey? I have spent quite a bit of time there before.

Enjoy your time down there. The warm climate really makes any form of exercise that much easier.

Well done on the running times, glad to hear you enjoyed your holiday. Jo'burg 05h00 morning runs were a killer when we were much younger @gholsa

Now I run around a block and kick it firmly under the bed, living in Durban running in summer, no thanks prefer a quiet beach/forest/park walk, days of running anywhere are long time gone!
