Nis Fortress is thus positioned towards the river Nisava, as it lies on its right bank, in the heart of the city. It is assumed that this edition dates back to the second century AD, when the city of Nis itself was first mentioned in sources and when it was under Roman forces. However, the Ottomans, who built it in the 18th century, specifically in the period from 1719 to 1723, are responsible for the fortress as we know it today.

It is of the artillery type, with four large gates: Stambol vrata, Beogradska vrata, Vodena ili jagodinmalska vrata and Vidinska vrata. There is also a small gate known as a chase gate or gateway, which leads to the city trenches, as well as eight bastion terraces. Today, it also includes numerous tourist facilities, such as souvenir shops, art galleries, catering facilities, but also a phenomenal summer stage, which is a kind of cultural center during the summer months.

One of the most famous cultural and historical monuments in Niš is certainly the famous monument on the hill Čegar. It was made in memory of the fallen soldiers and their leader Stevan Sindjelic, who distinguished himself with his heroic deed in this very place in 1809, during the First Serbian Uprising.

Namely, by shooting at the gunpowder that was in the immediate vicinity, he tried to stop the penetration of the Turks. In the same year, the Turks built the Ćele Tower from the heads of the killed Serbs.

Not far from the Istanbul Gate in Nis is from June to the fall of 1809built Ćele-kula. Today, it is a monumental museum-type building, which not only must be visited upon arrival in Nis, but is such an attraction that visitors sometimes come to this area just because of it. Many written monuments in which Ćele-kula is mentioned also testify to the interest in this incredible object, and it is also interesting to note that in 2014, the American magazine Mental floss listed Ćele-kula as the largest building made of human bones.

Of course, the first known event that we just have to mention is the famous Nishville, a music festival that is traditionally held every August and regularly gathers extremely large groups of interested musicians and tourists around the world. It is held in several impressive places of the Nis Fortress and often hosts some of the very famous, important and influential names from the world of music.
