Borneon Pygmy Elephants acrossing the river!

in #teammalaysia7 years ago (edited)

What a day to be lucky enough to see our largest mammal on the land in Sabah Borneo, the smallest species of Elephants in the world.

A group of Danish students and I spent 3 days in the Kinabatangan region on an Wildlife Safari Expedition. We had one of the best ever moments during the river cruise safari seeing a herd of about 60 elephants by the river bank.

After waiting for about an hour the herd decided to swim across the river. It’s very intriguing how they support each other to help and support the younger elephants while crossing the river.

Our Borneon Pygmy Elephants is gentle and less aggressive compared with Asian and African Elephants.

These days Sabah has the highest concentration of Pygmy Elephants in the world spread throughout however the larger numbers are centralised in Tabin Wildlife Forest Reserve, Danum Valley Conservation Area, Deramakot Forest Reserve and Kinabatangan Wildlife Corridor Sanctuary.

Conservation efforts and the support of responsible ecotourism have help these majestic elephants continue to roam around the forests of Sabah Borneo.

Support the efforts of Conservation.
