Mr.Kaamatan

Well, today I just wanna share you guys something that happened last week. Last saturday, which is on the 19th May, my friend, Fernandez, took part in a contest called Mr.Kaamatan or MRK for short.

This event was held in Beluran, at Dewan Masyarakat . May I wrote just a brief info about Mr.Kaamatan. This event has just recently been introduced in the year 2012 in some part of region in Sabah.

It’s not maybe that famous or more traditionalistic as Unduk Ngadau or Beauty Pageant for the Sabahan ladies.

And it is started during the Harvest Festival month,which is May or the fifth month of the year. So yeah , that is so far that I know about this contest. If you have any more info, please do let me know.

Now, my friend Fernandez has won the title of Mr.Kaamatan. Well, not only that, but he also swoop two of the titles, which is Mr. Talent, and Mr. Popular (which is by Facebook Votes).

And, in my honest opinion, he deserves to win this titles, because he works for it, put an effort into it. Most of the contestants were from Beluran, which is to their advantage, Fernandez came all the way from Sandakan, which is 30-45 minutes of travelling by car (depends on the traffic and driver as well :P). And he only have 4 friends for him cheering for him at the back.

There were only 5 participants for the Mr. Talent, and my friend got into the top 5. Most of their talent is singing, which to me, personally , I thought it was very common because singing has been a very common thing since a long time ago.

During Mr. Talent, my friend showcase a quite unique kind of talent, which has never been done before in MRK, that is the making of Bubuh Ikan. I don’t really know the english word for it or maybe just call it fish trap, but it’s to trap and catch fish. It’s a traditional fish trap to catch fish and how our ancestor’s feed their family with this method of survival.

Furthermore, what increased his credibility of winning the Mr.Kaamatan is how well he spoke in his mother tongue, which is Kadazan Dusun. Never once he stuttered or misspoke the language or making blurred expression, so that added the marking for his confidence and communication skills in mother tongue.

During the Questions and Answers session, my friend got a question that is a bit hard for me, but he nailed it. Without a sweat! You rock my friend! Even though it is Bahasa Melayu, but he answered ethically and respectfully.

So yeah, on the 26th of June, there will be a state level of Mr.Kaamatan and my friend will represent Beluran (although Sandakan is his place) to compete among the other region contestant. All the best to you my friend!
