Sex Work 101

So you want to be a hoe?

I, as well as many other sex workers get asked every day: "How do I get into sex work?"

I thought I’d write a few little blog posts on the subject and get my advice out there. This will by no means be comprehensive. It’s merely a starting point for those who are confused about where to begin. When reading these posts, keep in mind that this is just my opinion on the matter and not all sex workers will agree with me, or will they even go about things the same way as me. This is just some info on what I did, what I wish I had done and what I wish I hadn’t done!

You're about to start a business, take this shit seriously!

The first thing you need to do when starting any new business is research. This is a non negotiable step in your journey towards sex work as far as I’m concerned. Do your best to understand the laws in your state/country and reach out to your local sex worker advocacy group for a frank discussion on what sex work is and isn't. Here are some groups you can reach out to for advice.

Now before you go calling or emailing these groups I want you to spend some time on their website reading all of the information they’ve spent a great deal of time compiling for people just like you. Read through the info, note down any questions you may have and then contact your chosen group. I've created a free printable that you can download and use to make things easy for you! Some things to think about and discuss with them could be;

Personal Safety: Ask for tips and advice on how to keep yourself safe. Screening processes for your clients, self defence classes, who to contact in case of an emergency etc.

Personal Health: Sex Workers have lower infection rates than the general population - at least in Australia anyway. But that doesn’t mean you can ignore the risk that sex can have on your health. I’m constantly floored by the general lack of knowledge around STD’s and STI’s from my clients. In my opinion it’s part of your job as a sex worker to know this stuff and keep yourself and your clients healthy. Most advocacy groups have handouts and can tell you the basics but there are many free online courses you can take. Do the leg work and spend a few hours going over this info. It could save you some stress later when you see a lump or a spot on your flaps or dick.

Laws: Laws around sex work vary from state to state and can be incredibly confusing. Make sure you get the low down on the do’s and don’ts in your state. Some states, like Victoria for example, require you to register as a sex worker to obtain a sex worker provider license. Make sure you understand what you need to do, and the consequences for not following these laws. Some rules are routinely broken by escorts for various reasons but be aware that there can be consequences to your actions.

Incall, Outcall or Brothel: There are positives and negatives to all of these options and I’ll go over these in coming articles. Before you decide on what's best for you though, make sure that the services you want to offer are legal in your state.

But Wait, Theres More!

After talking with your local advocacy group there a few other things you should consider.

Things like whether or not you’re okay with people around you knowing what you do. Are you going to tell those that are close to you, or keep this to yourself? It’s important to have a support network and I would highly recommend at least one friend or relative knowing that you’re an escort. If it’s not possible for you to tell anyone in your life, make sure you stay in touch with your advocacy group and let them know you’d like to make some friends in the industry. For the most part, Sex Workers are a friendly and open bunch. But just like any other industry, there are assholes and people that will do whatever they can to get ahead. That includes leaking your private information etc. So be careful who you trust and follow your gut instinct.

What about your name? When deciding on a name there are a few things to keep in mind. There are thousands of escorts. The likelihood of the first name you choose already being taken by someone is highly likely. Make sure you google your chosen name and the word ‘escort’ ‘sex worker’ etc to make sure the name you’re going to take on isn't already in use. Aside from having a very pissed off fellow sex worker on your hands when they find out someone has started using the same name as them, you’re also probably going to confuse clients. Having the same name as someone else can also be an issue for your brand. The other sex worker with your name may do some things that you don't or maybe they’ve had a recent twitter meltdown and it’s turned potential clients off that name? Be careful about the name you choose and make it one that clients can easily remember! The main thing to keep in mind though, is that your working name isn’t overly important. I’ve never heard of a guy that said no to a woman because her name was something silly. So don’t stress about this too much.

Non-negotiable:

• Spend some time on sex worker advocacy sites and get an idea on the laws and the lay of the land in your state when it comes to sex work.
• Note down some questions that are important to you so you can be
  informed when you contact your local advocacy group
• Learn about your lady or man bits and how STD's and STI's are
  transmitted.

Optional:

• Decide what sort of services you'd be comfortable offering and where you want to work from. Visit websites escorts use to advertise to get an idea of what some of us offer.
• Brainstorm your hoe name and do some googlefu to make sure you're not fuckin' with anyone elses business.
