History of Haigh's Chocolates
Being the oldest family-owned Chocolate maker in Australia, Haigh's Chocolates has quite a long history. The doors opened to the first Haigh's store on the 1st of May in 1915. Since then, it has continued to grow.
Even during times of war, when supplies were not so abundant, they still managed to keep the Haigh's name going, and thriving. Haigh's Chocolates were even sold at movie theatres during the 1950's and 1960's.
As the years have passed, one thing has stayed the same, and that's the Haigh's family. The chocolate makers have kept this business within the family, something that gives it an extra special touch.
What started out as a single store on King William Street, has now turned into multiple stores around the country. With stores in Melbourne, Canberra, and Sydney, the joy of Haigh's has spread outside of it's South Australian beginnings.
Community Involvement
Haigh's Chocolates has played a significant role within the community since it first came to be. Making every effort to help deserving groups and organisations in South Australia, its not wonder they have such a special place in the heart of a lot of South Australians.
They have helped a lot of South Australian groups, such as Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Variety - the Children's Charity, University of Adelaide, Rabbit Free Australia, and many more. They even sponsor the bilbies within Adelaide Zoo.
The Chocolates
Ever since Haigh's was established they have been selling high quality chocolate products. Sourcing the best sustainable cocoa beans from all around the world, Haigh's makes all their delicious products from scratch.
Utmost effort and care goes into the preparation of Haigh's Chocolates, one of the reasons that their chocolates are award-winning. Their chocolates taste amazing, but don't take our word for it, try them for yourself.

Easter
One of the busiest times of the year for Haigh's is Easter. As well as the usual range of chocolates they have available, there is also a gigantic selection of Easter treats added to their collection. When you enter their stores, you'll be greeted with a sea of colourful eggs of all shapes and sizes to cater to all your Easter needs.
One thing you wont find at Haigh's at Easter is chocolate rabbits. Due to their work with Rabbit Free Australia and their dedication to the Easter Bilby campaign, Haigh's hasn't sold Easter rabbits for quite some time. Instead you'll find shelves of adorable chocolate Easter bilbies. A portion of the money made from these bilbies is donated back to Rabbit Free Australia and to help with bilby conservation efforts with Adelaide Zoo.
Gift Range
When it's not Easter, and you're looking for that perfect gift for a birthday or perhaps Christmas, then Haigh's should be your first stop. These locally made chocolates also come in a wide variety of gift packs and boxes. Ranging from small truffle boxes, to larger gift packs, there should be something there to cater to your needs.
As well as shopping in store, you can also purchase through their online store. This makes gift giving even easier, as you can get your gifts mailed directly to your recipient.

Rabbit Free Australia and the Bilby
Rabbit Free Australia is an organisation that promotes the rebuilding of Australian landscapes by eradicating the destruction made to it by European rabbits. The campaign for Easter bilbies was first made by Rabbit Free Australia, also known as the RFA, back in 1991.
Haigh's has been partnered with the RFA since 1993, and have been making chocolate Easter bilbies ever since. To show support for the RFA, Haigh's stopped selling chocolate rabbits at Easter time back in 1995, and sells their bilbies instead.
A portion of the sales made on the chocolate bilbies goes towards supporting the RFA's research and conservation efforts as well.
As well as their support of the RFA, Haigh's Chocolates also help to support the bilbies at Adelaide Zoo. The bilby exhibit located within the Nocturnal house at Adelaide Zoo is sponsored by Haigh's. With their support they've made a great home for the bilbies, which has resulted in an excellent outcome with their breeding program too.

Haigh’s Chocolates - Explore Adelaide
They really do make the best chocolate in Australia. I'm so happy that they have a few stores in Melbourne as well. :)
My daughter is heading for Europe later this year and was asking what would be something purely Australian she could take for a gift. I said, "chocolate bilbies!" When I first came here, I loved that they did bilbies instead of bunnies, purely because I think the Australian natives should be better incorporated into the traditional celebrations. I didn't know they #Wee connected with RFA though.
As much as I agree that rabbits are a problem there are much more humane methods of dealing with them than the germ warfare that RFA promotes. Ask anyone whose beloved pet has died from myxomatosis what a cruel way to die it is. It also doesn't work to eradicate them as decades on they are still throwing virus after virus at them.
Sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant!
I loved Haighs when I lived in Adelaide. And going on the tour!
It annoyed me there was no store in Brisbane when I moved from Sydney back there.
