As a principal teacher with 18 years of experience in the Tunisian education system, I am constantly looking for innovative methods to improve the effectiveness of learning in the classroom. It is with this in mind that I am participating in this competition in order to share and develop learning contracts, an essential tool that I have successfully integrated into my teaching practice. Can you explain what obstacles a teacher may face in the classroom learning process?

In our Tunisian education system, I often find myself confronted with a multitude of obstacles which considerably complicate the learning process in class, because, on the one hand, I have to manage students with extremely varied attention and motivation levels, which pushes me to constantly adapt my teaching pace to try to satisfy the needs of each student, some being naturally more engaged and progressing quickly while others require more support to follow, which creates a dynamic of very diverse and demanding class.

In addition to this management of individual differences, I have to deal with strict time constraints, due in particular to often dense school programs, which leave me little room to deepen certain fundamental concepts or to integrate transversal skills, elements which are nevertheless essential in the global development of each student and which, in their absence, can compromise the quality of learning.

Another major challenge that I frequently encounter in the Tunisian educational context is the lack of modern, interactive educational resources adapted to the current needs of students, because, in many schools, the infrastructure and educational materials are limited, which restricts considerably improve my ability to energize my lessons and make them engaging for students, and without these interactive tools, it becomes more difficult to maintain their interest and encourage their active participation, which is crucial for effective and stimulating learning.

What do you think is the importance of learning contracts and how have learning contracts helped your teaching process so far?

Learning contracts are of paramount importance in establishing a structured and harmonious classroom environment, because they allow, on the one hand, to establish clear objectives and shared expectations between my students and me, this which creates a solid framework where everyone knows precisely their responsibilities and knows what I expect of them in terms of participation and discipline, which promotes better mutual understanding and increased accountability of each student in their own learning process.

Additionally, using these learning contracts helps me maintain discipline in the classroom by establishing a clear framework for expected behavior, and this plays an essential role in respecting the authority of the teacher, who is particularly valued in the Tunisian context, because students, by understanding their rights and responsibilities as well as the consequences of their actions, develop a deeper respect for the rules of the classroom and for the entire learning community.

This framework not only strengthens discipline but also cooperation between students who feel committed to respecting the rules for the well-being of the group and this helps create a more harmonious and learning-friendly classroom environment where Everyone understands that their behavior impacts the entire class, which promotes mutual assistance and collective commitment.

What important components should be included in a learning contract and explain why they are helpful to you?

In a learning contract, several key elements must be included to ensure its effectiveness and clarity, including specific learning objectives that allow students to know exactly what they are expected to achieve during the learning period because it gives meaning to their efforts and offers them a clear direction to progress which is essential to maintain their motivation and to allow them to follow a marked path towards success.

I also include expectations for behavior because it allows me to set a framework for respect and collaboration in the classroom and by setting these rules from the start, I ensure that students know how to behave to contribute positively to the group which is fundamental to establishing a peaceful and productive working atmosphere. Consequences for breaking the rules are also an essential element because they remind students that there are limits that should not be crossed. This helps to establish a climate of respect and discipline that is beneficial for the entire group because each student understands that their actions impact the classroom environment.

Finally, including everyone's rights and responsibilities allows me to clarify roles and ensure a certain fairness and transparency in the treatment of each student. By defining these elements, I ensure that everyone feels respected and valued that promotes active engagement on the part of students and creates a learning environment where everyone is motivated to give the best of themselves to succeed.

What are your strategies for ensuring student compliance with the learning contract and how have the consequences worked so far, or do you have other ways of organizing the learning activities to remain effective?

To ensure that my students respect the learning contract I take a proactive approach of regularly reminding students of the rules and expectations at the start of each session as these reminders allow students to refocus on their goals and stay conscious appropriate behaviors to adopt to promote a respectful and harmonious class climate that helps create continuity in respecting the rules throughout the school year. In case of non-compliance, I apply fair and appropriate consequences, such as verbal warnings or, in the most serious cases, discussions with parents, because these measures show students that there are responsibilities to assume and that respect for rules is essential for the smooth running of classroom learning, and this has so far worked well to encourage collective discipline.

Furthermore, to stimulate engagement and encourage respect for the rules, I regularly organize collaborative and interactive activities which allow students to feel integrated into a supportive group where everyone has a role and responsibilities. These activities, in addition to strengthening their interest in the lessons encourage them to respect the learning contract in a group spirit, because they see that their involvement contributes to the success of the entire class.

Exactly, this is a common challenge to every teacher, students are different and their attitudes, mindset, skills and interests are different , but the teacher have to teach them all at the same time.
