The word tattoo comes from the Polynesian word "tata", which means "piercing the skin".
Between 1961 and 1997 in New York, tattooing was forbidden by law because of a hepatitis B bump. Today, tattoos are everywhere.
The star, which is the logo of the big Macy's department store, comes from a tattoo that has founder RH Macy. He made a red star while working as a sailor during his teenage years.
The patent of the first tattoo machine was in 1891. She belongs to Samuel O'FRailly. It is a modified version of Thomas Edison's 1876 machine.
Depending on the design and the machine used, the skin can be pierced between 50 and 3,000 times per minute.
In 1999, Mattel introduced a Barbie doll with a butterfly tattoo on the belly. However, it was suspended from proceedings after complaints from parents.
