A half century old dessert shop
Xin Fa Ting is a family run dessert shop that is over 50 years old. Like most dessert shops in town they do shaved ice, perfect for summer. The other weekend I went in for a break when it was getting too hot during daytime.
The shop has a nostalgic feel as soon as you walk in. They have a few seats that looks like were recovered from a waiting room. And you can see the tiles on the walls and the ground are the old fashioned ones as well. The decor extends into the seating area, and there are some old photos on the wall of how the city looks like in the earlier decades.
The shop is run by the younger generation now and has been decorated with a slightly more modern feel which blends in very well with the nostalgic tiles on the floor and wall.
The shaved ice dessert and the toppings that go with it are served behind the bank of display refrigerator. You can choose from many types of seasonal fruit, poached sweet potato and taro, grass jelly, peanuts, and sweet dumplings etc.
I ordered their signature shaved ice, which is actually made from milk and not water. This gives a very rich flavour and creamy texture. You don't need to add an extra topping to it at all.
My wife ordered her favourite sweet bean curd dessert which came with freshly made glutinous rice balls rolled in crunchy peanuts. We always order the same thing when we come here which sounds a bit boring. However it's not like we come all the time, so we always indulge ourselves when we do.
Xin Fa Ting is one of the older dessert shops in town and its always a delight to come here.
