Shinwa — My Local Japanese Restaurant
Since coming back from Japan, I’ve quite enjoyed continuing my ‘Japanese diet’.
Just down the road is a fantastic little Japanese restaurant that I now understand to be quite authentic. I’ve been a couple of times before; but nowadays I know what’s on the menu and can order more than just sushi rolls!
Shinwa Izakaya is on Sydney Rd, Brunswick (Melbourne, Australia) and their food is great! It’s also got a fabulous atmosphere, with tables on the floor... but with recesses for your feet, so you sit ‘Western style’ albeit sitting on the floor.
The menu is quite diverse, with meat and vegetarian options, sushimi, curries, and noodle dishes.
My partner got the curry with vegetable croquettes, and I ordered the udon with tempura veggies. Both of these dishes were delicious.
On previous occasions I’ve had the sushi, which is all pretty great, and very fresh.
They also have a great selection of Nihonshu (sake). We ordered the Ippin which was great.
From Australian standards, this is great value for an awesome meal, at about $35 each (which also included two bottles of sake).
I did the conversion to JPY... and it came way over what that would have cost us in Japan. We discussed how the stories of Japan being very expensive is a myth... I reckon that same meal would’ve been closer to ¥3000-4000.
