Fragolate: an ice cream shop with Amazonian flavors
In the center of Caracas there's a famous artisan ice cream shop, a tiny spot with an interesting proposal of delicious and exotic flavors.
They have the traditional chocolate, mint, vanilla... But what attracts the public most are the novelties. One of the offers to the palate is called "Sabores Nuestros" (Our Flavors) and is dedicated to enhance the flavors linked to the nostalgia of the Venezuelan people.
We can find bienmesabe (a traditional coconut cake), jalea de mango (mango jelly), conserva de coco (coconut sweet), chicha criolla (a refreshing drink based on rice, milk and spices), miramar (a sweet of chocolate with pieces of candied orange), ponche crema (eggnog), black cake (a traditional christmas cake), arequipe de cabra o búfala (a light brown soft spread of sugar and milk -goat or buffalo in their recipe), among others.
I tried the chicha one and it was great, but what really brought me here were the amazonian flavors, made with fruits from the huge and unknown Venezuelan pantry.
You can enjoy different amazonian fruits depending on the time of year: from december to may there's copoazú, chocoazú, and túpiro. From may to august manaca and moriche. And from august to november arazá.
I had the pleasure of trying copoazú (it's like a soursop, but more acidic) and túpiro (similar to tamarind), this last being my favorite.
If you don't want to go to the place (which is not in the safest area nor easy to access by car) you can ask for delivery, very fast and efficient service and a very fine presentation.
Or you can ask for "Viviana La Bicicleta" and offer them at your events in a lovely cart inspired by the sixties.
