Man Arrested For "Swatting" Prank That Left a Man Dead
*This is an update to a story I posted a couple of days ago.
Los Angeles police have arrested a 25 year old man who is allegedly responsible for a prank phonecall that resulted in the Wichita Swat Team shooting and killing an innocent man.
Tyler Barriss was arguing on Twitter over a $1 bet with another gamer, the two individuals were playing Call of Duty online, when he said that he would "Swat" the other player if he didn't pay up.
After a few written exchanges the other man gave Tyler an address down the street from his home. That's when Mr. Barriss called 911 and reported that a man had shot his father in the head and that he was holding his mother and a sibling at gunpoint. The caller, speaking with relative calm on the audio recording to 911, also said he poured gasoline inside the home and that he might just set it on fire.
Wichita police showed up at the address and surrounded the home treating it like a hostage situation. When a man answered the door the police say he made a gesture towards his waistband, fearing he was armed a Swat Team member shot and killed the man on site while his parents were inside the residence.
FBI are investigating the incident and reports show that Tyler Barriss was arrested before and served two years in jail for making bomb threats to a California TV station.
Police say they receive allover 400 incidents of swatting a year where people call 911 and report phony crimes. These prank calls are not funny at all obviously and now a man's dead.
I'll keep you updated with more as this investigation unfolds.
