A 'superhero' mum lifted a tree trunk weighing 39 stone off her screaming son's legs and carried him half a mile in a dramatic rescue .

Helen Mason-Bedford, 33, hoisted the enormous wooden log off five-year-old Dexter's crushed limbs before staggering for help.

Dexter was playing with his sister and friends when the massive trunk, which had been propped against another tree in a den building area, fell on to his left leg, smashing his thigh bone.

Mum-of-two Helen was walking with a friend close behind when she heard a loud bang and her son cried out in agony in Worcester Woods.

She managed to roll the log off Dexter's leg before scooping him up in her arms and carrying him about half-a-mile back to the Countryside Centre.

She said: "He stopped shouting and went white which made me panic. Immediately the swelling on his leg came up. I was frightened."

Helen, of Bath Road, Worcester, was struggling to carry her son and went into the Orchard Café to ask for help.

A man there was able to carry the schoolboy to Helen's car so he could be driven to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

The youngster had smashed his femur and doctors used weights to realign his leg, before he was placed in a cast extending from his chest, down both his legs.

The five-year-old is still in a plaster but his mum is hopeful that he will make a full recovery

He's still in a plaster cast but Helen is hopeful he will make a full recovery after the terrifying ordeal.

Helen said: "We had been walking the trail and we got to this area and the children started collecting sticks, like they normally do to build nests.

"We just heard this bang and Dexter cry and that is when we saw this giant tree trunk which was on his leg. I couldn't lift it off him."

She's now calling for the trunk which fell on her son to be removed from the park.

"I understand there are risks everywhere and as parents we look out for hazards. It is not so much a case of blame. I don't want to put people off going there," she said.
