Joni Mitchell, Mingus
It's a rainy October afternoon in New York. As an aspiring writer who's new to the city, I've decided to share a little of what I'm listening to and reading. In 1979, Joni Mitchell collaborated on an album with beloved jazz musician, Charles Mingus. Sadly, Mingus passed away before the project was finished, and Mitchell finished it on her own. Most listeners are most familiar with Mitchell's, "Blue," an album that brought the young artist her first major success. The bold choices and strange sounds found on "Mingus" were confusing for most fans, however, it is one of my very favorite Mitchell albums. The track "A Chair in the Sky" is a strange ode to the city of New York, a place in which time moves quickly, and where present moments and memories, dreams and regrets, collapse in upon one another. Have a listen.
