Product manager Tom Karlo wrote in a blog post that Stripe would transition away from bitcoin over the next three months, fully ending support for the largest cryptocurrency on April 23, 2018.

From his perspective this move is done because:

  1. the block size limits have been reached;
  2. Bitcoin has evolved to become better-suited to being an asset than being a means of exchange.

However, he states that Stripe remains interested what's happening with the Lightning and other proposals to enable faster payments.

Also, he states that OmiseGO is an ambitious and clever proposal; more broadly, Ethereum continues to spawn many high-potential projects.

Furthermore, he hints that Stripe may add support for Stellar (to which Stripe provided seed funding) if substantive use continues to grow.
