The Girl With The Velvet Bags

by E.D. (tidetaker)

On the outskirts of a grand city, beyond the forest, and over the river ‒ a small farm by the name “Plenty Raisins” could be found. It was a lovely place, surrounded by lush vegetation, growing everything between carrots, potatoes, spices, hops, mushrooms, and last but not least, grapes. The grapes grown here, were dried and put in brown velvet bags, and the velvet bags were then loaded on a small cart, and rolled to the city, where it was sold. These were the best and sweetest raisins you could possibly buy, and the demand was overwhelming ‒ making things easy for the little girl who both carried and sold them, the young daughter named Brenda. Brenda was a happy and energetic girl, she grew up on the farm just like the raisins, and had a lovely, hard-working father and mother. Everyone thought she was as sweet as the raisins, and they lived a simple and peaceful life at the farm.

Her parents always told her to be careful as she traveled to the city. It was just about three hours walk for a young girl like her, and she always looked forward to going there. Their family owned a small fruit stand at the closest market, and as she came rolling with her raisins, she had all the boys straighten their backs. Many of them flirted with her, but she had listened to her mother, and knew that a delicate raisin only tastes as sweet as a man has taste. And frankly, not many of the boys really appealed to her, although she did enjoy how they scuffled around and caused trouble.

She would sell her bundles of raisins, and then she walked home again – wondering when the day would come that she would finally meet the man of her dreams. But the years passed by, and Brenda turned into young woman. She got used to the loneliness of her simple life, and eventually stopped yearning for that man to show up.

But so one day, as the market was closing and as she was packing her things, preparing for the long walk home – she heard a man's voice say “Isn't it dangerous for a young girl like you to be walking home all by yourself?”. She looked up, and saw a tall guy with ragged clothes, comfortably tilted towards the fruit stand, with one foot resting over the other, and the arm pointing out from his side. Brenda quickly recognized him as one of the thieves who had snatched a sword from the merchant across the square. Surprised, and slightly withdrawn, she uttered “What do you think?”. He looked at her with deep intensity in his eyes, and replied “What do You think?”. “Oh I'm fine thank you”. They looked at each other for a moment, and then his serious expression changed into a warm and friendly face. He smiled, and asked her, “So you don't mind if I join you, do you?”. Even though Brenda knew he was a thief, she couldn't deny her curiosity for him. And so they walked together towards the farm, and although she was a bit afraid, she quickly fell for the man.

From that day on, they would spend as much time together as they possible could. But when her father heard about him, he was furious. “A thief?! What good could you possibly see in him?” Their love was tormented by many constraints, and things seemed to always come between them. So they ran off into the woods together, and found a place far away from everyone ‒ a lake. And right by this lake, under a tall tree, they married ‒ blissfully blind to the world around them, and what the future would hold...
