Allowing Fear to Change Our Focus
“When Elijah heard [a gentle whisper], he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave” - (1 Kings 19:13).
Thoughts for Today
In each of our lives, there will be times when we want to quit. Sorrow comes and the tempter draws near, whispering words of defeat and calling us to give up and to abandon the station in life God has called us to fill.
Have you left your post? Maybe you have and you wonder if you can retrace your steps back to where God first gave you your marching orders. Elijah had come through a very trying time. Few of us, if any, will ever have to face the wickedness he faced on Mt. Carmel. The prophets of Baal mocked God, and in turn, the Lord destroyed each one. Elijah’s faith had held strong.
But a strange thing happened in the aftermath of the battle—the hollow threats of a wicked queen brought fear to Elijah’s heart. In his distress, he ran and ended up in the desert under a broom tree, praying he would die! How could God’s prophet go from the mountain top to subterranean living in such a short amount of time?
The truth is that Elijah is not alone. Many of us have done the same by allowing fear to change our focus. He was sure he was the only prophet left who had remained true to God. In reality, the Lord had preserved 7,000 prophets who had never bowed their knees to a foreign god. If God has shown you that you have taken a wrong turn, confess your disobedience to Him, and ask Him to show you how to get back to the point where you can serve Him fully and completely. The way you turn oppression into opportunity is through obedience.
Prayer: Our Loving Heavenly Father, I only want to serve You. If I am off course, show me how to get back to the place where I belong. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, In Jesus Loving Name I Pray, Amen."
