Series of Short Stories about Great People: Steve Jobs. Original illustration.
Hi! It’s a nice weather today, isn’t it? Spring 1973. Portland, Oregon. I’ve just turned 18. Oh, by the way, congratulate me! I’ve finally dropped out of college. I wasted six months of life there. And I didn’t understand for what. I only spent my parents’ money which they had saved up for my education for their whole lives.
What do I want? Well, I don’t know yet. But I don’t worry too much. I have time for search. What am I doing? Nothing. I just walk around the park and collect empty bottles. I get 5 cents for each bottle. It’s enough for food to a greater or lesser extent. Especially since my rule is to be hungry and foolish. “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish”. I think it sounds good, isn’t it?
Where do I live? I was turned out of the dorm. So, I sleep on the floor at my friends’ houses. No, everything is fine. I do like such not very stable life. It’s possible to live by intuition. By the way, look! Here’s an advertisement “We invite you to enroll in our calligraphy course”. That’s interesting. I always wanted to learn to draw beautiful letters.
(Crunch) Sorry, I’m eating an apple. 10 years later, when we have been making our first computer, calligraphy came very useful for me. If I hadn’t enrolled in that course, there would not be the amazing graphics which characterizes our Mac. It all started with the fact that I fell in love with the beautiful letters. Maybe, in order to do great things, you should love what you do. Well, if you didn’t come to it, just wait and don’t force yourself. Your own heart will help you find an interesting lifework.
Steve Jobs (1955-2011) – computer engineer and founder of the Apple Company.
