Donating Some of My Crypto Profits - Free-market Style!steemCreated with Sketch.

in #story7 years ago

You may have seen my recent 1000% profit post and, if not, go check it out!

I have definitely not made millions (yet) but I've made enough to feel reasonably comfortable in the short-term for the expenses and lifestyle I currently have. Anyway, I was just riding my bike along and I had the thought to donate a reasonable sum of money to range of charities as decided by my Facebook friends. I felt like £100 was a good quantity, roughly equal to a day or two doing bike courier work (my main job).

I made a post asking people to recommend charities, causes, projects or anything which deserved some extra capital. I left the post open for a couple of hours then chose a top 5 which I would then put into a poll post. The finalists were Animal Free Research UK, Sleapy Cat Rescue, Celia Hammond Animal Trust, Terra Frutis fruit forest project, Schistosomiasis Control Initiative and money to go towards my local food bank.

Then I made a post assigning a Facebook 'react' to each of the options and then let it run for about 24 hours. After that, I took the total number of valid reactions and used the number of total votes of each option to determine the size of donation that each cause would receive. I have a bunch of vegans on my Facebook so the results came in as:

I know I didn't tell you which ones were which but you should be able to figure it out pretty easy. I also needed to add some much needed colour to this post.

Animal Free Research UK came out on top with 36% of the valid votes which secured them with £36 of funding. Sleapy Cat Rescue - £9. Celia Hammond Animal Trust - £9. Terra Frutis fruit forest project - £9. Schistosomiasis Control Initiative - £5. Local food bank spending money - £33. All donations were paid within an hour or so of the closing of the poll. I am yet to buy the food bank food though as I want to do a little more research into the best way to spend it - maybe even giving it in cash to the organisation.

I know some people get weird about people sharing their stories of good will but I think it can only be a good thing. It can motivate those who are willing to give, and that's all that really matters. If it irks you, then just imagine this account is anonymous - any better? It seems self-serving to only want to accrue a large quantity of wealth for oneself. Most of us are making a bunch of money from investing in this amazing technology. We should all be conscientious and use our new-found financial power to help those that are in need. I am morally opposed to taxation but I hold the voluntarily surrendering of wealth for worthy causes in high regard. I'd love to see a future where taxes are unnecessary and donations are able to support all the causes and people that need it. Hopefully in the future the crypto investments and these Steemit posts work out and I can make a bunch of donations with 10 times the value I did this time round.

That's a very generous thing to do. I feel that people that do good for others always get rewarded in some other way. Keep doing what you're doing and others might follow suit!

We'll see! I'm wondering you can help answer a question I have? I decided to 100% power-up this post. I heard it supports the network more. And I will be paid out in just STEEM and no Steem Dollars. Am I wrong?

You'll get Steem Power. It helps the network and you can't power it down into STEEM for 3 months.

Thanks for answering so quick. Sounds cool to me if it's helping grow this platform!!

I am sure you will be able to collect much more because your cause is helping others and when you start with such intentions then it automatically grow up.
My well wishes with you. :)

Hi, I'm here because you gave The Schistosome Control Initiative some love (you are literally the only person on the platform to do so so far!). I'm part of the Effective Altruism community, we’re interested in supporting high impact charities such as SCI and others that receive similarly high praise on the charity evaluator www.givewell.com. If you would like to raise money for them (or even just talk) about them again in the future, please do! In return I will try to support you in anyway that I can. Keep up the good work! #effectivealtruism
