Archaeologists managed to find the heads of statues of Aphrodite and Dionysus while excavating in Aizanol.
There are lots of Greek mythological stories about gods circulating and believed by the public. One of them is the story about Aphrodite, who is known as the goddess of love and beauty.
A Greek poet, Hesiod in his Theogony, said that Aphrodite was born from the white foam produced by Uranus' severed genitals and thrown by Cronus into the sea. Telling about Aphrodite, archaeologists reportedly managed to find the head of an ancient statue of Aphrodite and the god of wine, Dionysus recently.
The discovery was made during excavations at Aizanoi, 50 kilometers from the center of the city of Kutahya, western Turkey. Citing the Greek City Times, the discovery of the head of the statue of Aphrodite and Dionysus is present as an amazing beauty. Seeing this, the excavation coordinator, Dr. Gokhan Coskun commented on the discovery.
“During the excavation, we made a find that surprised us. This is the head of a large marble statue," he told Anadolu Agency.
“First, the head of Aphrodite who is known as the goddess of love and beauty with a height of about 50 centimeters. Other than the 45 centimeter (head) statue of Dionysus who is known as the god of wine in mythology," he explained.
In addition, they also found other antiques there, especially from the Roman period. This discovery is important, because it has demonstrated the polytheistic culture of ancient Greece that has existed for a long time without losing its essence in the Roman era.
Previously in August, they also managed to find the body of a statue of Hygieia, the goddess of health and cleanliness. The size of this statue is also reported to be the size of a human. However, they did not find the head of the Hygieia statue. However, experts say they are happy to have found the heads of the statues of Aphrodite and Dionysus.
