Indian Army is the land unit of the Indian Armed Forces, it is responsible for the military programs being operated on the land. Its primary purpose is to protect Indian borders from the invasion of external forces, to ensure peace and security within the country, to monitor the boundaries and to conduct terrorist programs. In the circumstances of disaster, unrest and fury, the Indian Army also cooperates with the administration to rescue and provide humanitarian assistance. The control and operation of the Army is under the Indian Ministry of Defense.

The Indian Army is the second largest army in the world, taking the services of eleven lakhs thirty thousand active soldiers and twelve lakh reserved military personnel. This is a wholly voluntary service, although there is a provision of mandatory military service in the Constitution of India, but it has not been implemented till date.
