Standing On The Roof Of Austria - Climbing Grossglockner
The Grossglockner is 3798 m (12.461 ft) high and it is the highest mountain in Austria. It is also the highest mountain in the Alps, east of the Brenner Pass. Glockner is also known as Tauern King/ Tauernkönig. High Tauern is a mountain range in the Central Eastern Alps. Below Grossglockner's eastern slope lies the most extended glacier in Austria Pasterze.
Climbing Grossglockner in on the wish list of many people. Especially in the summer months, there are a lot of guided climbing parties ascending the Austrian highest peak. Winter ascents are also done as well, but the summer ascents are more popular. Sometimes it gets a little crowded on the ridge, but the most problematic spot is the Obere Glocknerscharte.
We took the route from Kals am Grossglockner, which leads past the Stüdlhütte, where we have spent the night. The other route goes from Heiligenblut. Both routes meet at the Erzherzog Johann Hut (3450 m), which is also Austrian's highest hut. From there, the summit can be reached in about 1,5 - 2 hours.
