Some notable museums in Nigeria, Africa.
Museums in Nigeria are greatly appreciated and has been a source of entertainment and historical education. When we have break, majority fond of spending their leisure time at park, cinema, restaurants etc, but museums are also a place to visit.
I'll talk about few notable museums in Nigeria:
- Nigeria National Museum, Lagos.
This is one of the most popular museums in Nigeria, it's located Arowolo road, onikan, Lagos. The museum is founded in 1957, the time to accommodate people is scheduled to be 6am-6pm.
National Museum houses some notable collections of the country’s sculptures, statues arts, ethnographic and archaeological displays.
- JOS MUSEUM
This museum was founded by a man called Bernard Flagg in the year 1952, Jos museum houses majorly on pottery, especially the nok terracotta head which date back 500BC, you can learn the prehistoric of the indigenous Nigeria, museum technicians and enthusiasts found here for learning. It is close to Jos zoo.
- NATIONAL WAR MUSEUM, UMUAHIA.
This museum was founded 1985, it majorly houses extraordinary relics of modern and traditional warfare which are important to the history of Nigeria. You will find here also the Ojukwu bunker, relics of Enugu Coal Miner Riots and Aba Women Riot and the famous local bombs which is called Ogbunigwe. The museum also has time for services, 10:00am-6:00pm and also charge a sum of #200, equivalent to 1usd.
- NATIONAL MUSEUM, BENIN CITY.
It was founded in 1973. The museum stands for the depth and the Benin empire, visiting this place will leave you in wow and gratitude. There lots of intrinsic art works which are significant to the Benin Empire such as the famous ‘Bini’ bronze sculptures, cast iron pieces and the terracotta. It's built on king's square at the center of the Benin city.
5.NATIONAL MUSEUM, KADUNA.
It was founded in 1975, the museum is located opposite the Emir of Zazzau’s palace along Ali Akilu Road in Kaduna. You will found terracotta statues, bronzes and other ethnographic and archaeological artifacts in this museum. The museum is constructed to captivate people from far and wide.
6.ESIE MUSEUM, KWARA STATE.
Located in the Igbomina town of Kwara state, this was the first very first museum to be established in Nigeria. It was opened in 1945 and the statues in this museum were discovered in 1775 and are reputed to be the largest collection of soapstone images in the world. ESIE museum host festival in the month is April every year. This museum was founded by a then renowned hunter called Baragbon. ESIE museum has a gallery with a permanent exhibition named “Indigenous Artworks as Indicators of Cultural harmony” A playground is reserved outside the museum for children to learn and have fun.
7.NATIONAL MUSEUM OF COLONIAL HISTORY.
located at 6 Ikot Ekpene Road, Aba, Abia and was commissioned in 1985. The museum was also a national monument, which was brought in 1890's to serve as trade station. You will found items like old Nigerian money and relics of the slave trade era.
