If David had not realised the implication of his actions before, then he certainly had an awakening in those words. It took only moments of thought for him to nod his head and he was rewarded by a look of pure contempt from Hazel.
Not only had he betrayed his species by allowing the Throwback to live but then he had betrayed his son in an instant. Damned if he did and damned if he didn’t perhaps, but Hazel had expected a far greater show of loyalty for his son. Perhaps even negotiations for his son’s life, but to give him up without any plea for help was, to Hazel, cowardice.
“Take him away.” Hazel gave the instruction to Kirsty, though small in stature, she had curves that made both Hume and Wolf take more than a second glance. She used her voluptuous body and her apparent lack of guile to lethal effect, ensnaring men and Wolves to her bidding – one for the purpose of food and both for whatever her heart desired. Without guile? No, not Kirsty.
She took David in a grip that ensured he knew that she could snap his arm with no effort and less conscience and of course, he went with her.
Ralski was right behind them as they left, unseen and unnoticed but Kirsty’s back-up should she need or want it.
Hazel followed after, making certain they left no trace of the capture or of their presence.
Hazel had read David well. He was a natural coward and at the touch of silver on his bare and tender flesh, accompanied by the threat of more to be laid on more tender areas, had him giving chapter and verse on his relationship with Amelia, the birth of their son and the history of Jack and his eminent career.
David did not realise, but Anton had also made enquiries after learning of Jack’s presence at the summer camp of Keme’s tribe.
The coincidence was too great and Anton had left England’s shores in search of the source of Jack’s knowledge. Hazel did not anticipate that Anton would be returning soon. She had an idea that Jack had acquired extensive knowledge and that would have taken months, if not years, to gather.
Instead, she worked on the knowledge that David was giving up to them. She soon had Jack’s address and so sent a squad over there to search the place. She knew that Jack also had a lair somewhere close to where they had apprehended David, but as yet, he was keeping the location close to his chest.
The squad had finished a quick search and were almost ready to leave when Jack arrived at his street. He was fortunate that the street was straight and that his house was half way along it, for if he had been closer, the one left outside to guard the front of the house would have sensed his presence before Jack saw him.
Jack realised at once what had happened to David and he fled.
The guard gave the alert to the squad exiting the house but again, fortune smiled upon Jack and they realised a chase would not be advisable in such a well-to-do area. They took their findings – meagre though they were – to Hazel.
She accepted that they had not pursued him, but she sent them back out to scour the area once more for traces of the Throwback.
Jack was in a quandary. The Sentinels now knew of his home so he certainly could never return. He was unsure if they knew of the laboratory and it was with extreme and paranoid caution that he returned to it.
The last chance of becoming a full Werewolf had escaped him – or had it?
Once in his laboratory, Jack took a notebook and wrote everything that he could remember from the Grimoire which was still at his house. He realised that writing his journal may have been an error and leaving it at his house was one error too many.
With his diabolical mind set on his actions, Jack set to work. He pulled the small cage closer to the large cage and made enquiries of his more nefarious contacts so as to procure the items he thought he would need.
Hazel was becoming frustrated with the lack of progress in finding the Throwback and even with David’s information, its whereabouts remained unknown.
Hazel realised that David had finally grown a spine and resisted more torture but Hazel could not bring herself to bother too much about its capture – it would happen eventually and at least while it was in hiding, it was not committing any more murders. That meant that at last, attention of the Police and other agencies were being diverted from Whitechapel to more pressing and current occurrences in the capital.
She suspected that the Throwback was leading her into a false sense of security but for the moment, she was willing to follow where it led.
Perhaps, if she had any idea of what Jack was planning, she would have redoubled her efforts to flush out the Throwback.
Hazel entered the room at the back of the warehouse. She had chosen the building because she knew from living in the area that it was in transition of having a change of use in its contract. The lawyer holding up the process was a good contact of Anton’s and was happy to keep the building tied up in legalities for the time being.
That meant that she was free to use the building as she wished and at this moment, she wished to cause damage to a particular Wolf.
