Diamond and stones; A short story
He stared at himself in the mirror as he knotted his tie. He adjusted it further until he felt he was looking smart enough. Next, he picked up a comb and ran it through his soft, black, velvety hair. He took another look at himself in the life-sized mirror and smiled with satisfaction.
Yes, that's Ted. Let me take a moment to tell you about him.
Ted was a successful young man. He has a very promising career path and is doing considerably well for himself. His boss was even considering him for a huge promotion. His salary was bulky enough to take care of his family and still leave him with more than enough to flex around with.
Even though he's married with two kids, Ted still looked like he was just fresh out of the University. That's what money can do!
Money does to men what makeup does to women. You get the drift?!
Anyway, let's get back to Ted...
Just as he's about to put on his suit, his smartphone beeps. Ted picks it up. It was a short sms from a contact whose name was saved with "MBB" and it went thus: >'Green Lotus Hotel, 3pm.'
Ted smiled mischievously. Finally, he's going to smash her!
"Today na Today!" he thought to himself.
He took a quick look behind him to make sure his wife wasn't anywhere nearby and he deleted the sms immediately.
Charity, Ted's wife, was actually one of the most beautiful girls Ted ever met. He certainly has eyes for exceptional things. She's tall, slightly busty, with what some will describe as an "adequate" backside.
She's always the cynosure of all eyes anytime she walks by.
No doubt, Ted loves his wife to pieces, but that didn't prevent him from having flings outside. To him, girls were like fruits. He definitely has the best fruit in the garden, but the problem was that he really enjoyed fruit salad!
A bit of apple here, a slice of carrot there, topped with some pieces of watermelon... You know what am talking about..? Am sure you do!
"MBB" actually stood for "My Baby Boo". That was his own little secret though and that was what he saved his fling's contact with.
Ted picked up his suit, grabbed his car keys and walked out to the living room.
"I'll be home later than usual today honey" he said casually to his wife who was preparing the dining table.
"I have an audit with the the boss and some members of the board. So don't wait up for me"
"It's OK" she replied. "Just do your thing"
Charity was already used to her husband coming home late from work. It wasn't really a frequent occurrence, but he always notified her anytime he'll be out late, so she needn't worry.
If only she knew what sort of "audit" Ted was gonna have and who the "members of the board" were...
================================
Ted left the office earlier than usual that day. He could hardly concentrate on his work all through the day. Angela was one girl he's been dying to have. There was something about her, something he couldn't really explain. He just couldn't wait to meet her that evening.
3 o'clock saw Ted pulling into the parking lot of Green lotus hotel. He was dead on time. He walked into the reception and the receptionist flashed him a hearty smile.
"The usual?" she asked with a grin.
"Sure" replied Ted.
Without further ado, she pulled out a key from her drawer and handed it to him.
"It's been well arranged for you sir. Have a good time"
Ted smiled as he went up the stairs to his usual room. He was a regular customer there and by now, the receptionist already knew his "specs."
=================================
Two hours later, Ted walked out of the hotel to where he parked his car. His phone has been ringing non-stop for the past 2 hours but he was too "busy" to pick. He definitely had a good time with Angela.
He eased himself casually onto the driver's seat and pulled out his phone to know who had been calling. It was Charity, his wife.
A million thoughts ran through Ted's mind in a second.
Did she see him driving into the hotel? Did someone see him and then told his wife?
Was she monitoring him? His head was filled with confusion.
He decided to call her back.
A male voice picked the call at the other end.
"Good evening, am I speaking to Mr Ted?"
"Yes" he replied, a little confused.
"Oh, thank God. We've been trying to contact you for the past 2 hours" the voice continued.
"Your wife was involved in a ghastly accident. Please come to St Louis specialist hospital as soon a you can"
Ted's heart sank. Charity; accident?
He started the car and raced off.
================================
Ted kept pacing up and down as he waited for the doctor to come out from the theater. The nurse at the reception told him that the accident was so serious that an emergency surgery had to be carried out.
He couldn't stay at a spot. He just wasn't comfortable. He couldn't lose Charity now, no! He couldn't even bear to think of it. What is he gonna do without her? The kids, who's gonna take care of them like she does?
At that moment, Ted acknowledged how important and valuable Charity was to him. He realized that a million Angelas joined together could not match his one and only Charity. He prayed to God to keep her alive.
The doctor finally came out and Ted immediately followed him into his office.
"Doctor how is she?" he asked impatiently.
"How is my wife? Is she going to be fine?"
"Relax Mr Ted" the doctor said calmly.
"Pull yourself together. Your wife is going to live. It was quite a terrible accident but she'll be alright"
Ted heaved a mighty sigh of relief.
"You're one lucky man Mr Ted."
"I know doctor."
"No, you don't understand" the doctor continued.
"Your wife actually needed a transfusion because she lost a lot of blood. We kept calling your number with her phone but no one was picking up.
"Luckily, there was 2 pints of her blood type left in the blood bank. If not for that, your wife would have been a goner"
"Oh my God!" Ted moaned in a whisper.
"Can I see her now?"
"Yes you can, but make sure not to disturb her. She needs the rest."
Ted walked into the ward and the moment he saw his dear wife lying down on the bed, with bandages covering half of her body, tears rolled down his cheeks.
He realized how much of a fool he had been. There was a woman who loved him with her whole being. A woman who was ever ready to sacrifice everything for him.
He thought of what would have happened if there was no more of her blood type left in the blood bank.
He would have lost her, all because of a few hours of pleasure.
"Damn you Ted" he cursed himself.
He just realized that he almost lost a diamond while chasing mere stones...
