I wish I could write something as stark and profound as that. But I can't, so I'll settle for having the fine experience of reading it.

The opening has some clear hints of where the story might go. Which is good, but which could have taken you down a tried and true path. The great thing is that you took the reader there down a different path – so quickly, so directly, yet so unexpectedly.

No trite nonsense, no melodrama. Just a brief but very realistic drama, which reflects a reality that is not often seen or mentioned.

And it all fits together so well. Even the little phrases. In particular, her words "that's fine, that's what I'm here for," say more than a full chapter by a lesser writer would say.
