Hello steemit community, today I will write about a curiosity of medieval times.

First I want to confess that I am a faithful admirer and follower of the customs and way of life of medieval times (The Middle Ages, also called Medieval, is the historical stage of civilization that includes the fifth and fifteenth centuries. of the Roman Empire of the West and whose end was in the year 1492 with the discovery of America, was among others, the era of kings, knights errant, priests, the Catholic Church).

Today I want to share with you a curiosity from the medieval era, which I did not really know, and which will be very interesting for many of this community, with respect to the way they did justice to animals in the Middle Ages, which were judged by crimes committed against human beings, since the Catholic Church considered that they had soul.

At that time, humans practically coexisted with nature, where it was very possible to find houses shared with animals such as pigs, dogs, cats, cows and horses, and even usurping rats. They used to divide the house into two floors, leaving the top one as a bedroom and the other for the animals. Some of these animals accidentally killed people, especially children.

Faced with this situation, medieval justice, I judge the animals that caused harm to humans, the interesting thing of all this is that they followed a full trial before the court, where the animal could even be represented by a lawyer. His verdicts were: hanged in the public square, death at the stake, among others.

Some of the documented cases, about judgments to the animals that caught my attention were:

* In 1404, in the French region of Burgundy, three pigs broke a baby in his cradle, ate everything, the owners of the animals took them to court and were condemned to death. The penalty was hanging them in a public square.

* Another very curious case was when a horse killed its owner. In this test, the animal had to bring his lawyer, who argued that the dead man (owner of the horse) was very drunk, and that he died when he fell, so he was released.

* In the French city of Moisy, in 1314, a bull escaped by killing a man who was walking. The court decided to kill the animal and, like many others, suffered the gallows.

* Another, that surprised me was where the plagues were judged, like termites, ants or locusts, for eating all the crops of the inhabitants of some town, whose insects were excommunicated because they could not be slaughtered.

The end of the trials of animals was in the year 1492, with the discovery of America and when the Catholic Church made important reforms to stop considering that animals had souls, thus eliminating the judgment of animals that were slaughtered directly.
