My Entry For A Short Story Writing Contest: The Mouse In The Kitchen
The other day, @whatsup told a story about her encountering a mouse in the kitchen. Commentators of the story suggested to turn the situation into a writing contest in which the same situation is told from the perspective of the mouse.
Here is my entry: Love Doesn't Need Words - A Squeak Is Enough
Sitting in his apartment behind the kitchen wall, Mike hears how the door closes.
"Good, he's gone. Finally," Mike thinks happily. "I just hope he hasn't forgotten anything."
To check if he's really not coming back, Mike leaves the apartment and climbs on the cupboard next to the garage door to take a peak through the window.
Up there, he can see how the man enters the car, opens the garage door, drives out, the garage door closes and the car drives away. Gone.
"Yes! That's how I like it. And now comes the good part of the day..."
Mike smiles and thinks about how he could surprise her today. Maybe a cookie? or he could give her some of his fur so she has something that reminds her of him. Or perhaps a couple flowers left on the floor to point her in his direction?
Sunken into his thoughts about how to surprise the love of his life on this day, he climbs down the cupboard, walks around the kitchen corner to go back to his apartment.
Half the way back home, he realizes that she's coming down the stairs. It's still early in the morning. Mike is not much of a morning mouse, which is why he hasn't cleaned himself yet. He loves a slow and lazy start into the day.
He's cool with that, but he really doesn't want her to see him like that. She only deserves his best!
First he thinks about turning left to hide in his little cottage between garage and garden, but he's also hungry and the cottage still is isn't prepared for summer which is why it's empty.
So, it's the supply cave on the right, a small and long pathway behind the sink and next to the supply cabinet, where it sometimes literally rains corn.
Truly a wonderful place!
But it's too late. She just took the second last step of the stairs. Two more steps on the ground floor and she would see him.
"Damnit, where to go?" He thinks to himself. "You know what, screw it. I love her and it's time to make the move. Let's just do it and get it over with!"
Mike takes a deep breath, puts on his Sunday smile and presents himself like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his heydays. Just less oily.
One step to go and...
"Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaah!"
The smile on Mikes face is now as wide as possible without dislocating his jaw.
He starts nodding slightly: "Oh man, what a woman! Oh what a lovely squeak!"
It's the most beautiful sound no female mouse in the world could ever get out of herself. Not in the greatest moment of joy - but she can!
"Oh, I love you so much my dear," he thinks to himself while looking at this beauty right in front of him.
She's now just standing there. With her eyes and mouth wide open, she doesn't move a muscle. That's called presenting yourself.
"Gotcha!" Mike concludes from what he sees. How else could you possibly interpret this kind of reaction?
They may speak different languages, but the language of love, that's a universal one. Slowly she gets out of her love-freeze again and takes a small step towards him.
"Nice! Looks like I really convinced her. But let's not rush things too fast here," Mike is trying to calm himself down.
It's not that he's too conservative, but he sure is a romantic: "We have all the time in the world, darling."
Besides, girls want to be teased. If you give them too much too fast, they lose interest. What you have to do is to give them a little preview and then take it away from them again. That is how you make them want something and this rule also - and especially - counts for love matters.
Mike really knows the other side and he knows how to play the game of love...
And so he gives her one last smile, blinks with his eye and cool as a cat he walks back to his apartment thinking:
"Yeah, totally nailed that one!"
Hahaha
That mouse certainly had some balls.
Good one
LOL, good one! Entry received. Good Luck!
