The heart of man
Peter blacked out for a second, he was shaken to the bone marrow. He never thought he was capable of committing such horror.
" Guy, guy abeg make we move," Ovie said to him, bringing him back to reality.
"Ok, just give me a minute." Peter muttered, as he took one last look at his victim. She looked really young and pretty. He wondered why she was out by this time of the night.
He got home by 11pm that night, he knew his father will be waiting in the living room, as that was his usual routine. Not ready for a long lecture, he opened the door and sped past him to his room, ignoring his father's call.
In his room Peter was extremely restless, he wept for the young man he had become. His parents did all they could to raise him right, they gave him all he could ever want for. He shook his head, as he remembered pulling the trigger. In that moment when he made his choice to take a life, he didn't feel fear, love or hate; what he felt was power. A high like what he got from taking drugs, and he wept more at that thought.
Anna's mom looked at the clock beside her son Jeff's bed, she was surprised to see how late it was. Her daughter ought to be back by now, the bank she went to was not far from the hospital.
"Mom, are you okay?" Her son asked, on seeing the worried look on her face. She didn't realize, he was already awake.
"Its ok son, just waiting for your sister" she replied.
Jeffs operation was scheduled to start in an hour time, it was one that couldn't be moved. It required urgency and the hospital, refused to perform the surgery without payment.
"Can i get a muffin?" Jeff asked.
"Ok, do you want anything else?" She asked.
"No, just the muffin." he replied, with a warm smile.
She stood up and walked to the cafeteria. She never liked hospitals, it always reminded her how close one can get to dying. The smell of sickness filled the air, and the deafening silence made her restless. She said a silent prayer, for her daughter.
Note: This story was inspired by the alarming rise of crime in my corner of the world. My state capital Yenagoa, is now very unsafe for one to wander at night. Its a been a long time since i wrote a story, so forgive any mistakes. I hope to write more and learn in the process.
