The Tech-Savvy Grandma
My grandma, bless her heart, decided she wanted to join the tech world. She called me one evening and said, “I bought one of those smart phones, but I think it’s broken.”
I asked her what was wrong. “It doesn’t listen to me,” she said.
“What do you mean, Grandma?” I asked, trying not to laugh.
“Well, I said, ‘Hey, Siri, find me a recipe for apple pie,’ and it said, ‘Sorry, I didn’t catch that.’ So, I yelled, ‘APPLE PIE!’ and it just ignored me!”
“Grandma,” I explained gently, “you don’t have to yell.”
“But how else will it know I mean business?” she replied.
By the time I finished walking her through the proper way to use voice commands, she said, “Oh, I get it now!” Feeling triumphant, she tried again.
“Hey, Siri,” she said sweetly. Then she added, “Please don’t embarrass me in front of my grandson.”
Siri replied, “I’m sorry, I didn’t catch that.”
She hung up the phone. “This thing is going back tomorrow.”
